good evening group... after a few email exchanges with Rob Lifson today turns out the Sky Birds found in the "Find" as mentioned earlier are about 92 packs out of 100 in the original container. all but 1 pack are factory sealed. Rob mentioned the box is from 1933 and should be the low numbered series. obviously there will be some Mint cards and duplication if they were to be opened. what to do if i won the box... how do you put a value on it? it helps knowing what year and series the cards are. what would some of you all do with this box?

Sell me a set cheap! Just kidding. But seriously, that would be great to be able to buy some of those. Aren't they going to auction the unopened packs though in groups? Would you get them all? It almost seems a shame to open them. Are there other unopened packs of this material around? Has to be rarer than the cards.

Personally, I would open a couple of packs for the fun of it, sell a few packs to recoup some cost and then save the rest of it as the centerpiece of my Skybirds (or rather, nonsports) collection. I'm sure many others would have a different opinion, but the box filled with the sealed packs is a direct connection to the 1930's. Once the packs are sold or opened and dispersed, then there are just more cards, wrappers and a box on the market.

Chuck, there was a nearly complete display box of R773 Goudey Indian Gum (the black back 1947 reissue cards) in unopened packs won in an auction just a few years ago and the unopened packs don't seem to have spilled out onto the market. The winner just took 'em and put 'em away in his/her collection, just like you are suggesting.

In April of 2003 the economy was a lot healthier than it is now. However, It may not affect the hammer price of something so rare. Maybe Leon will make a contest of how high it will go! I really can't even guess.
