I just upgraded the last "non-8" card in my 1956 Elvis Presley set, so all 66 cards grade PSA-8 or higher- what I call "straight 8". But I am a bit more excited at attaining "straight-8" status for my 1954 Power for Peace(PFP)set.
In order to do that, I purchased the #2 registry set, which contained some high-grade cards I could not find anywhere else, including the #1 card in PSA-8. PFP cards are admittedly common, even in high grades. I believe that large vending finds were made of these cards some years ago.
But Bowman exercised terrible quality control in the production of PFP cards. Well-centered cards can be tough to find. I remember buying sets of these in the early 2000's and finding only a handful which could be graded without an "OC" qualifier. Strangely, these sets seem to have just about disappeared from the market; I rarely see them offered anymore. Where have all the PFP sets gone?
Consulting the PSA Pop Report reveals that some PFP numbers can be particularly tough in high grade. Not surprisingly, that includes the #1 card, with only one card graded above PSA-7, and that just a PSA-8 (now part of my #1 set). Number 40 is equally tough, with only one PSA-8, and none higher. There are several other numbers with three or fewer NQ cards higher than PSA-7. All told, only 69 PSA-9 NQ cards and one PSA-10 PFP cards have been graded, out of more than 1300 submitted. For a set so common, I find that very surprising.
I have always enjoyed this series, with its brilliant color photos of military weapons systems, and its detailed narrative on the card backs. I have posted scans of several of my favorite cards with my #1 set on the PSA website. Check it out, perhaps you'll fall in love with this set too!

So nice to see collectors take some time out to add scans to their sets . It can be time consuming but i think it makes the registry a much more colorful place .
It's another way of sharing your cards with other collectors .
I've often visited Jerrys sets and had a good old look at the cards .
Well done to you both . Appreciated .

Bill,
first, congratulations on the Elvis achievement. I will put that set on my 'gotta get' list. Right now, I think the list is at least ten or twelve deep so it may be a while.
On to the PFP set, I believe the major find was in the 1980's as that was the time frame for my beginnings of the set. Some No. Cal. dealers used to have the aforementioned razor sharp PFP cards for sale usually at one dollar per card. I held out for fifty cents a card and recently was talking with Andy Munoz, a dealer who is getting back into the non sport card scene about the PFP set. I told Andy my set is VG to NM and he laughed saying that I may have the only set in that poor condition in existance. Andy said huge quantities were found and sold by he and others and he still may have a few singles available. I told him I would keep my VG set intact rather then trying to upgrade it. I will ask him about the off centering and some of the card numbers you've mentioned the next time we speak.
