Dietzen Men of the Old West

Dietzen bakery/bread issue, apparently from 1973 (bit modern for this board, but interesting topic)---anyone know how many cards in set? What's the significance of the letters in upper left corner? Looks like a common point of attachment on the backs, where there is tearing---how were they issued?
