Sometime in the past Mastro auctioned off a complete R21 1937 Wolverine Gum Ripley's BION set that had a GPA of 6.33 (No. 1 on the all time PSA Finest List). This happened before I started collecting this set (2007).

As always I'm trying to get as much info. about this set as I can.

Does anyone out there have old Mastro Auction catalogs that show when the set was sold & what the selling price was?

This information would be highly appreciated.

LOT#30 Min. Bid $2500.00

Each piece has been graded by PSA. Offered is the complete set of 48 cards, presented here as a glorious finished product. Advanced collectors have toiled for years to locate and acquire single cards, especially the rare "high numbers," from this classic 1930s issue. One of only two card sets produced by the obscure Wolverine Gum Company of Detroit, Michigan, this colorful product features scenes and situations from the "Ripley's Believe It or Not" archives of Robert Ripley. The cards' subjects include such titles as "The Tower of Skulls," "The Ship That Shot Itself," and "Dead Man Wins a Fight," and the widely sought-after card number 34 pictures the great boxer, John L. Sullivan. This representation of the prized R21 series holds a stratospheric GPA of 6.33, commanding recognition as the #1 Finest Set on the PSA Set Registry. (It's also the only such array that boasts 100% completeness.) Includes: Graded PSA NM-MT 8: 16 cards w/#'s 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21 (OC), 22, 30 and 45 (OC); PSA NM 7: 10 cards w/#'s 1, 4, 11, 14, 19, 24, 33, 34 Sullivan, 39 (MC) and 40; PSA EX-MT 6: 8 cards w/#'s 3, 25, 26, 28, 29, 31, 32 and 44; PSA EX 5: 12 cards w/#'s 12, 15, 23, 27, 35, 37 (MC), 38, 41, 43, 46, 47 and 48; PSA VG-EX 4: 1 card, #36; PSA GD 2: 1 card, #42. No more than four higher-graded specimens have been confirmed in any of these depictions, and 26 of the cardsmore than half of the complete setare "none graded higher" examples. This challenging and special issue was tough to construct in 1937, and virtually impossible to assemble in set form, today. The very best set of its kind in the industry!

FINAL SALE PRICE: $12,544.80

Thanks Charley - exactly what I was looking for. And out of the four missing highest graded examples I have three.

Jerry,

Since they "switched" to Legendary, the old Mastro auctions are now searchable online. From the main Legendary site click on the "History" tab. You do have to log on with your screen name and password to access their archives.
