I now have hours of work ahead.......why ???

  (Login DanCalandriello)

I just read an email where a contributing collector wants me to remove
ALL his contributed images.......

No, it was NOT from Don nor Jim.

So first, I have to run a global search on all webpages he is/was part of,
and remove those webpages. Even if he didnt supply all images for that
webpage, I dont keep records.

So, hours of work ahead.......all other web page activity will have to stop.

When done, I MIGHT list the webpages that are removed..

===================================================================
This is not open for discussion, but I thought all images were contributed
for the good of the hobby, today and for years after we leave the hobby.
===================================================================
If anyone else want me to remove their images/webpages, simply email me.
The deadline will be midnight tonight.
===================================================================
After this exercise in futility, NO images/webpages will ever be removed.
All images received will be the property of Tom Boblitt. All posted images
should be thought of as a contribution for future web pages and for the
good of the hobby.

You cannot imagine the amount of work/time this will take...

that really upsets me to read this dan, that kind of a person would have to be sick in the head to be an indain giver on the images dedicated to our hobby.
i thank you so much dan the man for your countless hours of webpage building.
my favorite is all the gum card boxes from the 1950s and 1960s and the candy boxes i never knew existed to see images of was a virtual museum to enjoy.
kind regards,

I am not unhappy with the collector.

I am unhappy that I didn't ask Tom to have it in writing
as part of the Net54 setup. These things happen. Hopefully
there won't be many others.. I have given midnight as a deadline,
for other's to decide to remove their images........
as I really have to get moving to make this work.
=========================================================
I've always made it clear that I push things out and don't keep
records....the "credits" area is my only "salvation" for something
like this.......

Would you believe I have received emails criticizing me giving
"credits"....

Like I said, all collectors have to be respected....
we all are different.

WOW! I am with Aaron. Would you explain why they want the images to be removed? If they are upset because their images are being stolen, could you disable right-click function? I really like the idea of the images out there. I really do not care whose collection they come from. I think its a nice way to view cards from a set and determine what cards are in the set. Sorry you have to do all this work Dan.

Nobody has a "right" to the image, except for the producer of the card.

I sometimes see former cards of mine that have been sold and the new owner ask for credit for use of "his" image. Did they give credit to Allen & Ginter, or Goudey, or Topps? Does Allen & Ginter, Goudey, or Topps demand credit of not allow it's reproduction? Of course not, they can't. Collectors do not own the image.

Dan,

This stinks. Period. Have you considered just saying "NO"? If permission was given originally, that makes use of the images a gift to the board. I do not believe we are required to "give them back" upon request. (Maybe an assist from one of the board lawyers would help.)

Please consider releasing the name of the contributor involved. It would serve the rest of the board to know who it is that's being so selfish and uncaring.

Dan,
That is right about the images. Nobody owns those except the card producer. When people scan stuff for you the only thing they are doing is donating their time and effort. A "thank you" or a credit is all they are really entitled to. If they want their "credit" removed that is fine. They DO NOT own the pictures and have no right to ask that they be removed.

Don's images cannot be duplicated.
I keep mentioning Radio Gum.

Anyway, I am blessed that the global search worked and

I am, indeed blessed. Oh, and another BIG thank you, Mr Don.

Just to go on the record - all of the images I send in to Net54 are free and to be used for the benefit of my fellow hobbyists. I have no interest in taking them back and am disappointed that someone else would do so. The whole point of the gallery is to provide a very needed resource for collectors and allow others to see great stuff that they might never see otherwise. If someone else uses my contributions, well that's ok, too, as the more coverage of our hobby we get the stronger it will be.

Dan - I haven't sent you many images; but those that I have sent may be used at your discretion. This goes for any that I should send in the future (although family medical issues are currently preventing much research). And the thank you that you always provide is sufficient payment/thanks for me.

Please keep up the good work.

And to all who have posted concerning the contributor who asked Dan to withdraw his/her images, please keep an open mind. I would like to think there is a valid reason. There are far too many laborers in this country masqurading as attorneys.

Hi Dan,

You have my profound respect for all the work you have done on this website, and in the hobby.

But my simple answer to the question you posed in the title of this thread is: "Because you allowed it". You agreed to undo the images. I do not believe there is any obligation anywhere for you to do so. If you said no, would you be sued? I think not.

A wise person said to me many years ago, "life is much easier when you don't try to carry the weight of the universe on your shoulders".

Dump the load, and stand up straight Don. No one should have to deal with that level of BS. Life is just too darn short.

Best in collecting,

Bill BEngen

Dan, good morning from Asia!

To echo the gist that is common to many of the above comments, nobody 'owns' these images, they are the product of a publisher long ago and all we have are the electronic equivalent of xerox copies. If someone gives you a photocopy of some document, he can't demand its return later based on some misperception of ownership. And it he tried that, you'd be well within your rights to just tell the guy to bugger off.

Dan, you volunteer massive amounts of your time to upload all these, for us, and get nothing in return from us but gratitude.
So if anyone asks you this type of request, you should reply that your webpage volunteering DOESN'T include the removal of images, once donated. There was never any commitment to 'return' images, once donated, so don't take that on now . . .

Goes without saying, you (and Les, for The Wrapper) have 100% right to use any images I share, now and evermore.

I feel for ya Dan - if you do end up taking them down, create a list of what's missing (more work, I know) and post it - collectors would be more than willing to fill in the gaps. And as mentioned numerous times prior, feel free to use any image I toss your way.

I'm sure you are under no legal obligation to take those scans down, but if you feel
obligated as a "gentleman's agreement" I guess that's up to you.

I really don't understand why someone would pull that kind of thing though.
Kinda creepy since nothing on the scan identifies this person. I just don't get it.

Anyhoo...

It's up to the rest of us to make up the loss in whatever way we can.

I assumed that......

No score for this post
July 4 2009, 5:42 PM

it was implicit I was giving consent to use the 100's of images I spent many hours preparing. While they were some rather rare items hidden amongst the scans - I have never thought of my stuff to be enjoyed in issolation. Part of the fun for me is the sharing. I have in fact slowed down a bit because my friends who shared the joy of hunting and collecting information and "stuff" no longer live anywhere near me or they have gone off in different directions. While there aren't too many people here that specialize in the 19th century material I like - it's still a place I can come to and "hang". The gallery is part of the whole experience.
I'm pretty sure I know who it might be - don't understand the logic. I'm sure one of the detectives here will be able to figure it out - by what items seem to no longer be in the gallery. Obviously it was more than just a couple of images or Dan probably wouldn't have said nuttin..... I don't fault people who want to keep some things close to the vest - but material tends to be offered and sought - when people have an idea what's out there - and how it might be of interest - to buyer and seller. Also, they DID send the images in the foist place (Brooklyn speak)................

Hey everybody -

I'm a sometime lurker on the boards here, nursing a headache on a cold rainy Halloween evening, awaiting trick-or-treaters (hopefully I'll get some).

I own several different websites based around images of vintage pop-culture objects such as trading cards, comic books, etc. The great bulk of the images were found online, but many of the trading card sets (e.g., the cheaper ones) were my own that I scanned one by one.

Let me say right here that any of you are free to use any of my images for any use you see fit, public or private, personal or commercial, without permission or so much as a how-do-you-do.

I don't consider them 'my' images, especially as so many of them have come from now-long-expired eBay auctions and other sources, but also because I like to think of myself as an archiver/custodian. Hopefully in the future my websites can be used by beginners in various hobbies as reference tools to see what's out there and available to collect and enjoy.

The following (among others!) are all mine:

Bubblegum-Cards.Com
Comic-Covers.Com
Mad-Monsters.Com

So, pardon my bumping an older thread, but Dan's original post kind of steamed me.

Really, this just isn't right. Who would submit an image to anything on the Internet and still think it can be pulled back? What's the saying about unringing the bell?
