Ebay's new page format - help on saving pictures?

Did the giant pull a fast one on us? Seems as if they're attempting to crack down on our ability to save images from auction listings. When I go to view an auction page (some, not all), images are now corralled in the upper left hand corner, as opposed to being located below the item's description. When I try to select the image to save, it doesn't allow that. As a fan of gathering images for future reference, this leaves me a little bummed - does anyone have any info on this or perhaps a way to bypass it? Not sure if using a Mac has anything to do with it...

The truth is you cannot stop people from "borrowing" picture if they are on the net, but you can make it harder to do so though and that is what Ebay did.

I'm using a pc with Vista and there is a small utility called Snipping Tool so when I see an image I'd like to "borrow" I start the utility which let me highlight what I want to snip and save it where ever I want to.

I do believe there is something similar on Mac computer my daughter is not home at the moment I'll ask her when she's back, she use a Mac.

Screen Rip32 (got it by Googling)

I didn't even need a tutorial...I love it.

I still have right click and 'save picture as' options.

Remember, you can always hit the 'print scrn' button, go into something like Powerpoint or some image editing software and hit paste and then save that image as a jpeg. REGARDLESS of the site's security. I've yet to find anything where that didn't work. That's for Microsoft based operating systems.

What I used to do to prevent image borrowing is a would make a table cell put the image as the background in the cell and in the cell I would put a transparent gif, so the if you right clicked and save image as all you were saving was the transparent gif not the actual picture you were seeing.

But you are right nothing can stop the print screen feature you can even use Paint (available on every pc) to save the picture.

that's pretty sneaky though and I like it! Overall the print screen works, but it's a pain in the arse because you have to cut, paste, trim, etc. But, it's effective!

I don't know if it is my computer or what but I can go around Auctiva protected page very easily, when the box is coming up saying it is copyright protected I click OK and then my menu comes up so I can do the "save image as" as usual.

Hello to All ,

Hi Claude , same on my PC with the right click , but i'm sure this new toy will make it easier , you can just take the desired segment from the protected image .

It looks promising .

Good info everyone - when I get time this weekend I'll play around and see what I come up with. Thanks for the bypass Dan - I knew an image guru like yourself would find a way.

While I can no longer simply click and drag an image from the main listing to my desktop, if I hit the enlarge button below the picture, I can then simply click and drag the enlarged picture to my desktop and save the .jpg image wherever I want from there. Uploading to Photobucket is easy from a bunch of images on my desktop.

Ok, found a way for Mac users - once you click "Enlarge" below the image, which automatically opens it in a separate window - hold Command-Shift, then 4. This will open a tool to draw a box and capture the portion of the image you want - once drawn it goes directly to your desktop, where you can click and drag it right into iPhoto.

Another option is Command-Shift, and 4 - then hit the space bar - a camera will appear, which grabs the entire image or website - sending it directly to your desktop.

A word to all collectors, if you have the space (external hard drives are quite affordable now), try scanning items at 300dpi, or higher if it's a smaller item. Some of the more obscure items in collections may never be seen again, so a high quality digital representation for future use is always a good idea. The images we grab from Ebay and the Net are often quite small, at 72dpi, which doesn't print well. Imagine The Constitution printed on a matchbook - that's what we're dealing with. Try to avoid compression when saving scanned images as well - commonly found in Jpegs. Tiff is an uncompressed format but eats up a bit of space.
