Help in identifying blank back cards

Would like help in identification of these cards. Cards resemble the J.A. Pattreiouex Dirt Track Riders from 1929/1930 but are the wrong size. The Pattreiouex cards are somewhat longer and not quite as tall. Cards measure 63mm x 42 mm and appear to be actual photographs. The cards are blank backed.

Captions on the cards read:

Joe Francis (English) CCA 1
Dicky Smythe (Australian) CCA 2
Noel Johnson Australian CCA 3
Frank Pierce (Australian) CCA 5
Roger Frogley English CCA 6
Colin Watson (English) CCA 7
Frank Arthur (White) overtaking C. Spinks (Australians) CCA 9
Jim Kempster (English) CCA 10
Ben Unwin (Australian) CCA 11
Cecil Brown (White) overtaken by Vic Huxley (Australians) CCA 12

Any help would be appreciated.

Jon.

Jon --

You might try going over to www.ebay.co.uk and search in the tobacco section - they might pop up in there...

Take Care,
Geno

Geno - thanks, I frequent Ebay/UK often; as well as Ebay/Philippines, Ebay/Australia, etc. that are English language. Wish my language skills were better; so I could search on some of the other Ebays. I know there are many card sets available in the genre I collect from other countries.

I had hoped that some of our European members might recognize the cards.

Hello to All ,

Hi Jon , a wild guess , Amalgamated Press ' Thrills of the Dirt Track ' a medium sized set issued in 1929 . It consisted of 16 cards .

Mark - thanks for the reply. It is a good guess, but (not sure) don't think correct. Murray lists the Amalgamated set cards as 80 x 52mm, which are significantly larger than the ones I have.

Hello to All ,

Jon , the M prefix relates to the sleeve size you should buy to store the cards in and not the actual size of the cards issued .

The cards would be smaller than the actual pocket .

Murrays use an A prefix (80 x 41) for standard sized cigarette cards and the actual dimension of a cigarette card is much smaller than that .

I still could be wrong though .

Mark - thanks for the clarification.

I have sent emails to both Murrays and Londons to see if they have any "odds" in the set. If so, will purchase some of the numbers I don't have and see what comes in.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Hello to All ,

Hi Jon , ask Murrays to send a scan of a card , it'll be cheaper that way .

Good Luck in finding out the issue .

TBH i think i'm wrong on the AP as i'm sure Murrays would have marked the issue as ' plain back ' in their price guide .

Mark - Turns out the cards were printed in 1928 by Joseph Doyle. The good news is its only a 12 card set. The bad news is the other two are going to be very difficult to find, and expensive.
