if you wouldn't mind some input... i just got done reading a fantastic article from the Wrapper Jan 2001 issue, author Chris Watson (courtesy from Ralph Perry)about the scarcity of 1933/4 sky birds. to make a long story short, his position is # 32 doolittle series of 144 could well be the toughest card in the set. Ralph & I feel its tough, but not as scarce as # 25 series of 144.

would any owners of these two cards please reply here and let me know if you own one or both, duplicates, and what condition they are in.

i will start. i have both cards, no dups, # 25 vg/ex - # 32 Good.

Rand, my Skybird variations are in storage with rest of my collection back home, so I can't check. But believe I probably have about two of each (#25/144 and #32/144).

So mark me down that way, as a placeholder until I can offer better info by next summer.

I went and checked on mine and I have the #25 Series of 144 graded at PSA 4. My #32 is a series of 48, graded at PSA 6. I swear I have another #32 though. I'll have to dig.

Hey Rand, I have both, I would estimate them both to be in the 4-5 range

My #25 and #32 are both Series of 48. #25 is a PSA 4 and #32 is a PSA 5.

This kind of survey won't work. Complete set collectors or old-timers would have both in their set, even if one was 5-times more difficult. You need to check new-finds to make it statistically accurate.

Eric, when Chris Watson did his 1930s card census 10 years ago, he polled collectors re ALL their vintage cards in various predefined sets, and then also found out which were locked into completed sets, which were residing in sets in progress, which were 'free' duplicates. It was a lot of work and the results were amazing.

And based upon thousands and thousands of Skybird cards in the hands of "old timers and set collectors", there were only two or three each of Doolittle #32/144 and Wehner #25/144.

I don't think Rand here is going for statistical accuracy -- just an indication re two specific cards, and how many are floating around in the hands of this board's participants.

==> What would REALLY be great would be if we could convince Chris to do ROUND TWO of the entire 1930s card census . . . Whaddya say, Dr.Watson?

it was a very casual question. i told the readers where i got my inspiration for the question, and i wanted to know what collectors here had any of those two cards. it would have been nice if you would have answered the question, do you even collect sky birds? if so, please chime in. thx...

ps... when are those CLCT numbers coming out?

i do not own their stock. i think eric makes a strong arguement on how difficult it will be for the stock to really get strong again. the reason i am so interested is the business model, and how it can generate more revenue so many years in the hobby now. also, we have some board members here that think psa is the end all be all. eric has done an outstanding job of explaining how the company is positioned and where they are going. he has a real knack for getting to the root of the numbers and can predict the next trend for them. i like to read his posts on the topic.

If it helps any, I found my #32 example before #25. They are both in low grade, anyone want to downgrade theirs and make some money?

Speaking of which, anyone have an extra example of #'s 29 and 33 in "Series of 144?" Last two cards I need for a master set!

hey marty, series of 144 # 25 & 32 are very tough in any shape. when it comes to ex/mt or better you'll be waiting for # 89 - 96 - 107 - 108 (i know you have 108 in a psa 7). i think # 89 & 96 are tougher in ex/mt or better than any other card. just my thoughts

Thanks for correcting, Amigo Marty, you really had me shocked there!

(With just your post, the known population of #25/144's and #32/144's had nearly grown 50%!)
