E2 Navy Officers (variations)

Hi there.

Does anyone collect E2 Navy Officers. I'm trying to make sense of the name variations and the back variations.

For example, I have these two Albert Key cards. One has the Lauer and Sutor back and the other the no-ad back. The name captions are different (lieut-commander and rear-admiral) so I figured perhaps the two different backs might have different captions, but I have others with both backs who have the same caption on the front.

Anyone else have different names/titles for the same officer? Any other observations on this set?

Thanks!

Rob

I have a whole set of no ad backs and 20/24 of the Lauer & Suter backs. Hadn't noticed that but will look at them and let you know......

Found this from what appears to be a 1901 Yokohama, Japan trip album online...........

Albert Lenoir Key......Lieutenant

So....the Lauer & Suter card would have to have been around or after 1901. Likely later..........Wonder when he was promoted to Rear-Admiral? Nothing in Wikipedia.......

Looks like both of the no ad cards are a little more re-drawn than the Lauer & Suter cards offering a little more detail?

consulted him on Naval info..........and developing the Great White Fleet

By identifying and working with two talented junior officers in the Navy Department, Albert Lenoir Key and William S. Sims, Roosevelt assembled an ad hoc staff on naval policy. This staff funneled technical information to Roosevelt that allowed him to dominate policy discussions with Congress and the senior Navy staff. The President annoyed his admirals by micromanaging their responsibilities and ignoring the chain of command.[12]

Roosevelt dramatically increased the size of the navy, forming the new warships into a "Great White Fleet" for display purposes and sending it on a world tour in 1907. This display was designed as a show of force to impress the Japanese, and even more to motivate Americans to support naval power and be aware of the new role in the Pacific. Yet, the ships were almost forced to return because of the inadequacy of American ports in the Pacific.[13]

Thanks Tom for the information on Key.

I agree that the blank backs look a bit more colored in.

Key's uniform on the blank backed card looks a bit different as well.
