1965 Topps James Bond Question

Hi there,

Can anyone explain why for so many years people thought this set was produced by Philadelphia Gum? It's now listed as a Topps set almost everywhere, but in an old Sport Americana Price Guide to Non-Sports Cards, it lists this as a Philadelphia issue.

The backs make mention of Glidrose Productions Ltd., but not Topps or Philadelphia.

Anyone have any insights?

Thanks.

Kevin

Don't know who is claiming it as Topps - but that is completly wrong.

Here is the wrapper that clearly states the manufacturer:

Hello to All ,

After a quick 'search 'on e-bay there are 1 or 2 sellers listing JB 1965 cards as a Topps issue .

Thanks for this information. Actually, it is widely listed as a Topps issue now (on PSA Set Registry, various websites). I guess now the question becomes why is it listed as a Topps set?

Well, if PSA says it is a Topps's set than all the wrappers must be fake happy.gif

Don't know if this will be much help..

"Ian Fleming Publications is the production company formerly known as both Glidrose Productions Limited and Glidrose Publications Limited, named after its founders John Gliddon and Norman Rose. In 1952, author Ian Fleming bought it after completing his first James Bond novel, Casino Royale; he assigned most of his rights in Casino Royale, and the works which followed it to Glidrose. In 1956, Ian Fleming hired literary agent Peter Janson-Smith to handle the foreign translation rights in the James Bond novels. He was the literary consultant and chairman of Ian Fleming Publications until 2001.

"Today, Ian Fleming Publications administers all of Ian Fleming's literary oeuvre and is owned by Fleming's family. In July 2008 Ian Fleming Publications announced the appointment of literary agent Simon Trewin, from UK-based literary agency United Agents, to manage worldwide English-language rights in the Ian Fleming titles and Young Bond."

Best in collecting, Bill Bengen

Hi Kevin - great question. It appears that when the set was requested to be added to the registry the requestor added Topps to the set title. PSA didn't catch the error and it was then listed that way. My opinion but seems to be the only logical answer. The pop report doesn't mention Topps. Apparently once listed in the registry as Topps, the herd followed.....

OK, Just noticed they also list the 1966 James Bond Thunderball as Topps as well. That is also incorrect - that series was also done by Philly Gum.

PS: I emailed PSA about the errors - who knowns if that will matter or not.

I wonder if this relates to confusion with the Man From UNCLE set?

Just heard back from PSA:

Thank you for pointing this out to us. We have updated the composites accordingly.

And the registry has been corrected!

And thank you, Todd for posting the picture of the Thunderball wrapper. I haven't seen one of those since 1966. Maybe some day I'll be able to acquire one to go with my 1965 JB wrapper. It was fun seeing it though.
