Hey, no secrets!
What does Mod Tom really, REALLY want in this auction, hmm?
(Perhaps we can arrange a 'Peeweesee Special' and all manage to stand back on this one, whatever it may be, just for our Boblittmeister . . . ?
After all, we DO owe ya, for the Forum and all . . . !)

But I'm not aware of anyone that's still standing out in the cold from previous auctions--Mastronet or Legendary. If I'm wrong, please correct. They're obviously doing something okay as the consignments seem to be coming in pretty good again. If someone decided not to bid, though, I could understand why. I will continue to bid and I know quite a few other board members are bidding....

Tom - based on threads on the BB side, a vintage Frank Chance Jersey has been altered by adding a Cubs logo from a lesser players jersey. Crap like that makes me want to stay away.
What echoes in my mind is: "What Else Have They Altered/Improved That I Don't Know About?"

If you have doubts, I'd email or call Steve Lucas. Steve has been extremely helpful to me. He's a great guy and I can't imagine anyone feeling worried about bidding after talking to him.

I'd echo Alan's comments about Steve. He's been very forthcoming to me as well.
As for the Cubs jersey, since that's fully disclosed in the auction description, I wouldn't be as concerned about that as I would something that isn't disclosed.....who knows. I won't be bidding as it was about $45K so far. I've seen similar things disclosed in other auctions and it may be commonplace to do such things, I don't know. As long as it's period to the year of the uniform, I guess it's kosher as to being the right logo. It wasn't the logo that came with the jersey though and I assume that someone willing to pay big bucks for something like that would factor that into their bidding habits.
I think I've won something in each of the last 2-3 auctions from Legendary. Working through Steve, I was reassured that there would be no problems. There weren't.
Were I a consignor, however, and were still owed money, I would be very concerned and wouldn't likely be a consignor again. While a lot of the merchandise in the current auction is owned by principles of Legendary, there are lots of things that aren't owned by them and somehow, they appear to be still getting consignments. I haven't seen any concerns about consignors being owed money like there were on the BB side a few months ago. Hopefully, they've made those people whole.
There appears to be a myriad of issues that they are working through and somehow seem to be getting through some of them. Ultimately, I think we're all better off if they get them solved, than if they were to fold. There are few of the larger auction houses that get the quality nonsports consignments that they do. Attributable largely in part probably to the efforts of Steve Lucas and Brian Bigelow.
As Dennis Miller used to say on his HBO show...........
"That's just my opinion, I could be wrong..........."

"As for the Cubs jersey, since that's fully disclosed in the auction description, I wouldn't be as concerned about that as I would something that isn't disclosed"
Tom, it's fully disclosed NOW, but my understanding is that it wasn't disclosed accurately until it was questioned on the Game Used board. It seems pretty clear that Doug Allen knew exactly what had been done to the jersey and thought he could slip it through. He got caught. The on-line listing has been amended, but the catalog speaks loudly to his intent.
I've been bidding in Mastro/Legendary Auctions for over 10 years. And to date I have never had any problems. Steve Lucas has always answered all of my questions and is very knowledgeable and honest when it comes to grading cards.

Nor have I ever had any trouble with them Dave. And I truly believe that most of the people working there are honest and good hobby people.
I even understand, to a certain extent, the financial problems they went through after they split off from Mastro. I think they handled that poorly, but it does seem to be behind them.
I know it's Sports related, and this is a Non-Sports board, but this issue with the jersey really bothers me, for several reasons.
First of all, Mastro auctioned this same jersey off in Dec. of 2004. Obviously Doug participated in that auction and won that jersey. Having the president of an auction house bidding in his own auctions is very troubling.
Secondly, he altered a very valuable piece of memorabilia, by adding a logo he removed from another jersey. (Not to mention the fact that this devalued another, perfectly good, 100 year old jersey.)
Thirdly, when he decided to sell it off in this auction, he neglected to mention the alteration was done recently. Instead, he used ambiguous language which seemed to indicate that the alteration had been done after the 1911-1912 season. The listing reads: "(Affixing thread color variations and the extensive edge wear suggest strongly that the "C" is original and that the Bear logo was replaced after initial season usage.)"
Of course, "suggest" is a problem because he KNEW it had been altered. He owned it and had requested the alteration.
In addition, "after initial season usage" is a problem because it wasn't done in 1912 or 1913. It was done around 2007.
The guys working at Mastro may be fine, but this incident is slimy and I don't see any way around that.

Wow, Jim. I no longer wonder why Doug doesn't understand these types of things until he gets called on it. It just doesn't seem to stop with these guys no matter how long it goes on.
