Years ago, Ron Wilson was documenting the different airplane card games, especially
Zoom. I had a couple box variations, and will someday post more info about them.
I wish I could remember the aviation card game OTHER than Zoom, but it eludes me
at the moment.
Here is a picture of what I'm talking about, borrowed from ebay.
The sets have always been "very affordable", staying at 20.00 for years.
Collecting the variation boxes is quite cool, I must say.

The cards you are referring to were all made by Whitman. The Card-O airplane cards were encorporated into the Zoom sets. Some were distibuted in the "blue Box" in your illustration. Two decks in the same box. Both identical sets, but one deck had "plain backs", and the other deck had "fancy backs".
The other set, in your orangish box, had different airplanes. Just one set, with plain backs.
So, to collect the entire variations of the Whitman Zoom sets, you needed both boxes of cards.
Then, Whitman made "Squadron Scramble".
Three variations are known.
Card Game #1: Plain blue-back cards-no red dot in the center of the stars on the insignia of the aircaft on the box.
Card Game #1: Fancy blue-back cards- red dot in the center of the stars. Same planes as above.
Card Game #2: Plain green-back cards. Different planes.

Picked up a c.1930 AVIATION GAME from Milton Bradley today...the cards are quite striking so I thought I'd share them with you. The game has a total of 56 cards...four identical cards of each of the aviators but Lindy, who has the four unique poses shown below. The booklet contains extensive histories of each flier plus game instructions; apparently the cover was printed on the proofreader's day off...
