I have 20 cards from this set, all have two holes punched in
them as shown. The holes are two different styles, on one the
holes are 1" apart and on the other they are 1-7/16" apart.
I was told the holes were used to attach a piece of candy to
the card.
Please let me hear your ideas about this.

Those are awfully clean cards if they had a piece of candy attached to them. They'd have had to have had some type of twist tie or something like that through the holes holding the candy to the card. You would think the holes would have suffered condition-wise if that was the case. I have no other plausible theory but I find that difficult unless they were pulled PRIOR to having their allotted candy attached..........

If those holes are from someone attaching candy to the card, it's unlikely that it was done by the manufacturer since I've seen lots of Tootsie Circus cards and none with similar holes.

cards have great color and you have the 2 toughest in the set (monkeys/hippo) i dont think there was a redemption offer and if there was i dont know it was attached to the cards (meaning cards had to be sent in for them) perhaps a piece of the original box or something. its a shame that the cards have the holes.

Thanks for the input. I have weighted the pros and cons of all the different ideas that I
could think of. When I first got them I thought that some kid had gone wild with a paper
punch. The holes are definitely not hand punched and are punched by a gang punch as
opposed to individually because when you place one card on top of another the holes line
up perfectly. A type of punch that few people would have access to.
Chuck mentioned what I considered one of the strongest cons, if the hole were part of
a marketing scheme there should be more of them out there. I was hoping that some
one else would report having some of them.

I don't know what it means, but all holes appear to be the same distance from the nearest edge of the card, about 21/32 of an inch to the center of the hole. -Jack
