REA Auction Pickups

I got the lot I was after - The complete run of Wrapper's. This will be an invaluable addition to my Non-Sport card reference library. I probably paid too much but I really do not care. Several hundred hours of reading joy await me and that alone makes the price I paid worthwhile - an entertainment expense.

So who here got stuff from the REA Auction? Brag or complain. Some sets/lots sold for very weak prices.

To me, the most interesting lot in the auction was that Kinney Military near-set (LOT 1653: 1888 N224 Kinney Military Near-Complete Set (612 of 622), which is something rarely seen. This went for $7k plus the vig, which certainly seems to have been a bargain for someone, $11+ per card . .. .

Now, I am not familiar with Kinney card values, but am guessing this was one of those cases where the individual cards were worth more, if sold separately, than a huge accumulation like this.

Believe this would be the same 'syndrome' which tends to lead to undervaluation if/when anyone attempted to sell an R73 Indian Gum master set as a single lot. For some of these monsters, the market doesn't seem to attribute a set completion premium, for some reason.

Thoughts, all?

Is worth about $2000 or so....French Hussar.....would have loved to have the set but I have about 500 of them and just couldn't see the price. Knew it would go for that much. Know some other board members interested, so hopefully one of them got the set....a neat set but realistically tougher than the T206 set as you will see many more T206 Wagners out there than individual copies of the last four or five cards from the N224 set.

Ralph, the N224 set went for about right. Most of the cards were in VG condition at best. The scans I requested had dinged, creased cards with 50% back paperloss. Although I'm sure most were better thsn those.

I was going strong after the Ginter types of nations set but after about $1600 shifted gears to the N76 set, Duke great americans. I woke up about 12:15 a.m. to find myself still in the lead, went back to sleep. Just happened to wake up again about 3:15 a.m.and found I was outbid. I put in one final bid then, woke up this morning and found myself to be the proud winner of the set, along with the N225 Kinney set. I feel the prices were about right. I have been collecting the Ginters the last couple of years and feel there prices are very strong lately. I was outbid on a few sets in Heritages last auction. Congrats Jerry on the Wrapper collection, I had my eye on that lot, I have been picking away at them on the bay,,at $6 an issue I dont think you over paid.

Jerry,

Congrats on the Wrapper run! Personally, I don't think you overspent as you almost never see those early issues offered. After I missed a run offered in one of Legendary's auctions last year (possibly the same run?) I'm pretty sure I've spent more than that piecing one together and I'm still 2 issues short (#215 which I have scans of now, and the Mars Attacks Special which I have only ever seen the first page of in the Gallery). From the photos, the first few issues in the run you picked up look to be in nicer condition than mine too. Have fun reading all those!

It was fun seeing the bids for The Wrapper back issues. Add another one to the pile as 80 scanned pages of #259 are emailed to the printer tomorrow....

Congratulations to everyone on your pickups. I hope everyone is as happy about their wins as I am.

My initial bid was $1100.00, got out bid. After agonizing over it for a few days I put in another bid at $1500.00 and was very pleased to get them at $1300.00. With the buyer's premium it came to $1527.50. To me money well spent.

Les I will have many wonderfull hours reading the back issues of your excellent publication.

Lance if you want I would be willing to scan the Mars Attacks isuue and email the scans to you. Email me at [email protected] if interested.

Of course, Jerry, now that we've established a primo price for the mag, Les is finally going to open that secret vault of his and flood the market with "Wrapper Millenium Edition Golden Complete Sets". Comes with an autograph, too. Only $199 at Wrapper HQ . . . cash or MOs only . . .
