I found a preview of a book online at this url:http://books.google.com/books?id=VUuLtPgJ48MC&pg=PA96&lpg=PA96&dq=%22gum+cards%22+criminals&source=bl&ots=8NYvM_wgHE&sig=qlDpTVd_Mecdn7gk9KkV4bxYnPc&hl=en&ei=JoiTTsjxAqfJ0AH-trHRBw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CB0Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q&f=true
The book is called Bronx Boy: A Memoir By Marty Toohey
On pages 96-101, there is a chapter on Celebrity Gangsters. In it, the author discusses bubble gum cards of criminals. He states the backs of the cards had facts on the criminals and that each card ended with the phrase Crime Doesn't Pay. This is very close to the R37 phrase of Crime Did Not Pay.
He lists the text for the cards for Machine Gun Kelly, Baby Face Nelson, & John Dillinger. Since none of these criminals are known for the R37 set, I cannot confirm they are from the same set. Here are the excerpts from the book for the three cards discussed.
The timeline on these narratives fits with R37 and the narratives are similar in style to the known R37s.
In a previous thread, it seeed that most agreed that Dillinger did not have his own card. Instead you had to colect 4 cards with pieces of his face to capture Dillinger and get the mail in premium. If the text above is indeed from an R37, that seems to contradict the conclusion of 4 pieces. Another possibility is that the premium (Dillinger death certificate) also included a Dillinger card which would have the narrative on the back.
Does anyone know of another gum card set these could possibly be from?
Any thoughts on if they are possible R37 cards?
It is unfortunate the book does not include pictures of the cards.
