Hopefully this means your impasse with your wife got worked out! Great pickups--especially the Wrapper lot..........and if you wind up with a duplicate US Kendigs flag, it's the only one I need. Nice pickups!

It's cool to see things from other countries too! We have a fantastic Argentinian restaurant in town here and I love to go for the mixed meat dinner! Three types of steak, sausage, over french fries with a lot of chimichurri sauce......my mouth is watering right now..........
Love those foldee cards from 1969........

Recently found these in a group of cards, any ACC info on these? Obviously, they were an insert, the Paris Exhibition was 1900 so that makes them a very early D-issue. I am very familiar with Standard Biscuit's later baseball sets but this was a new one for me...

Nice pickup on the Wrapper back issues Greg-I need a few oldies myself and have posted in the BST miscellaneous section on the ones I need (about a dozen all #32 or earlier).

Here is the RARE (smirk) BOBBY RIGGS "rookie" card (smile) and as far as I know the ONLY "riggs" candy card ever issued.
A little bit out of my wheelhouse being 1976 issue but how often do you get a "sexist" non sport card?
I also think its funny that the copy writer got in their "dig" on the back: " He's considered the best Ladies Tennis Player ..."
Most of you will remember the "battle of the Sexes" , though not as big as the " Thrilla in Manilla" it was another 70's pop culture piece that was part P.T. Barnum and part Reality show.

Nice Card Adam...but can we find a non sport CANDY/GUM card of Mr. Riggs besides the Sugar Daddy?
Another matter:It would be fun to have a Bobby Riggs Checklist of all cards (including exhibits ,candy or other) ...a project for when I'm finally incarcerated.
Mr. Hornish: I don't like "pits, Pits, Pits!..in my Juice, juice, Juice!"
Seriously Dave...you and I have watched too many episodes of the Odd Couple! As soon as I spotted this card..I thought of the episode that had Riggs and King ...Ping Pong?
As far as the...
"Oscar Madisoy"..(you just can't shake it ..all these years later)(smile)

Charley-ya got me as I am a huge Odd Couple fan. That Riggs episode was classic TV, yessir - I still think "Oscar Madisoy" every time I mis-type my name!
WPIX in New York still runs the occasional episode; they certainly run them during Mets rain delays.

I'm gonna look more closely after I google it a bit. Alan very interesting seeing the battle scenes on those bread cards. Dave Hirsh had some proofs for some non-tobacco related company (circa 1920's?) up on ebay featuring a few of the different scenes (I know one sold in excess of 500.00 - a bit much but and at those prices one might still be there!). Depending on the vagueries of early rights and ownership of course - the strength/beauty of the depictions obviously contributed to their continued usage in multiple venues. It's a tribute to the early non-sport card lithographers and manufacturers. Long live net54........
PS - very nice grades on those N cards - hard to find them like that to begin with and then at a reasonable/realistic price.

Adam , don't be a prick...you know where I was going with this. I thought you were contributing but I guess you posting your "riggs" exhibit was just to call into question my term " rookie"...and now...you are attempting to "school" me on my sugar daddy card..Sports...NOT non sports.... I guess its Sports for the Non sporty kind of thing.
Wow Brother, you have some issues. I'll be at the national...do you want to duel? or straight up Bare Knuckles? (since you are the boxing man) or would you rather acknowledge that we have had differences. Agree to disagree and move on?
If you are looking for flaws in my posts or even in my personal life... I got a million of 'em bud. Knock yourself out. ( pun intended)
BTW: I recomend your book to people , even with your acidic nature. You are just man.

Wanna tone it down a bit, there, Charley? My commentary as to the Riggs cards is just the cataloger in me trying to be as accurate as possible on card IDs and designations, not a personal affront or slight, so no need for threats or ad hominem attacks.

OK Adam, If this is true..No worries, No Harm.My apoligies. It just appears as though instead of CONTRIBUTING to the "riggs" subject you like pull things off course.
Ya know...you could have posted the exhibit and came out straight and say something like: " Here is a much earlier riggs card which is more of a rookie in my Card ID, Accurate,Designation mind "
" so no need for threats or ad hominem attacks."
These are not "threats" my friend. I'm sorry you are hiding under a blanket or you are that fragile. Really? Seriously?
You're a little sharper than that Adam.
Just my way of saying:Hey Dude, I get you, I understand, Point taken, kudos, put a "w" in your column,My mistake, etc. lets move forward.
It IS/WAS about F-U-N...About Cards..not about "tit for tat" or taking pot shots at what pick ups are posted. I liked the card and it brought back some memories..thats all and why I come here.
AND..Pleeaseeee! do not try to play the 'Victim" ("ad hominem attacks")as you have been dropping verbal jabs at me for years. You don't hear me crying foul or running.
Just the way of the world. ( nothing new under the sun )
Our world has enough "Victims"...What we need is more folk who will stand on what they believe , be upfront and speak plainly even if unpopular with others.
Your correction is welcome, your poor little me act and copious snide comments over the years are not.
These little moves are tiresome and just more static in my world.
As you wish.

Picked up the following N203 with an interesting front (bicycle image) but an even more interesting back... the "White Labor" line is a very interesting one given the large Chinese population in California at the time. I also love the city of Grass Valley and even contemplated moving there several years back so this one has quickly become on of my favorite N-cards in my collection...
Also picked up one of the tough larger N5 advertising cards, the back has hand written notations that it was obtained from "Tom Harris's Cigar Store" in San Jose CA.

I've always wanted one for my type collection. I've been the under-bidder on the last three of these cards I've seen - 2 on eBay and 1 another auction - all @ around 120.00 (even though I valued them at around 75.00 - I got more invested each time) as I'm a ginter guy. The winner re-listed them all on eBay as is his right - and I think they're all still up there - 2 for more than a year. They're scarce and neat - I keep looking and eventually the next one will come up for me to shoot at. Ginter and Duke both spent a good deal of their profits on advertising and there is a lot out there for Pet cigarettes. Pet cigarettes were distributed on the left coast (S.F.?) as well as normal east coast outlets established for distribution - presume some issues might be exclusive to that area and therefore with a very low survival rate due to the great fire and usual factors affecting paper. Many sunny south and pet cigarette advertising trade cards were stock cards - this is suggestive of a series and a private issue. As most all Ginter "stuff" has been cataloged in the WTI - for them what is so inclined - I think it would be covered in volume 4. Too lazy right now but made a mental note to look next time I'm in there - however my memory usually doesn't allow for long term storage and using the wti a bit unwieldy....................

Went to a couple of flea's this past weekend and found a few crumbs...
Day 1:
Day 2 (different flea mkt 20 miles away from the first one):
Upon closer inspection of the boxed sets I noticed a strange similarity (keep in mind these were 2 different flea markets 20 miles apart and different dealers):
I guess they were destined to be brought back together!

I don't recall ever seeing this brand associated with the S72 silks...
Also, picked up a collection of (7) of these advertising cards. Willie Edouin was a famous actor and he owned and operated "Willie Edouin's Sparks" theater house in and around 1881 or so. Sanger was his partner/actor and Alice Atherton was his wife, the other (4) I have are all different images of his wife... he must have liked her! Anyways, I thought they were pretty cool...

I have to think about it more and check the factory numbers - but 1) Pet actress silks may have had most of their distribution on the left coast. 2) there are only 18 of the 105+ actresses with the brand. 3) The disribution numbers or longevity of the promotion under the Pet brand coupled with the above might account for it. 4) every time you show up at the flea they put the pet actress silks under the table to save for Todd............

sense with Pet on the Left coast as the top of the silk identifies the California district/warehouse. I know some of the pet cards of boxers and sports and stuff were predominantly on the left coast. I think Pet was associated with A&G at one time--right?

It was glued to a piece of cardboard which was glued into a scrapbook. It was then torn out of the scrapbook and the cardboard was trimmed (along with the wrapper). Then I got it and tried soaking it off the cardboard. The problem was neither the wrapper nor the cardboard was porous enough to effectively allow the glue to dissolve. After peeling a layer off the cardboard, it worked a little better and after a while I managed to separate wrapper from board. A little reinforcing on the back with archival tape and it presents well enough until I get a better one.
I wonder what compelled someone to write "1938" on the wrapper when it is printed twice. Oh well, it has character. - Jack J.

Wow Ken. Thanks for showing the R166 box. It looks like the same one pictured in the small B/W image in the Benjamin Non-sports guide. Is that the only known box? Two cards at once ... it must have been impossible for a 1942 kid to resist. - Jack J.

Great stuff as usual from everyone this month, love seeing all the neat stuff people find and what is out there. I have to say the ACC is my favorite reference and realisticly the most complete in American cards. I actually have a copy where I checkmark off next to a set if I have at least one card from set. Sometimes I will have a card in my collection for years before I realized it is listed in the ACC, just happened to me with the H 918 set, I had no idea those cards were cataloged.
Anyway here is some stuff all soaked from a victorian scrapbook with stuff in it primarily from the 1880's/1890's to as late as 1950's I would guess. Oh yea, I love the refrences by Burdick in the ACC,where he states every collection should have a representations of whatever he is writing about whether its albums, banners, cards, stereoscopes, scrapps etc.etc.etc. I try to have a well rounded collection such as he suggests.

I don't know if it's been the best one ever, as I've enjoyed every one of them them a lot, but there have been a lot of great cards shown. Always fun. Thanks everyone!
These threads get so long though, I wonder if it would be better to have a weekly Pick Up Thread (like August 1st Week, August 2nd Week, etc.)?

Mike,
Thanks for posting the " Leading Moving Picture Stars"
cards and box. I have some of these cards (I don't Know
how many, I have not located them yet). I thought they
were probably issued in a manner similar to what you
show, but never knew for sure.
This has been a great week; two of my unknown sets
identified in two days, yours and the Presidents posted
by Dan.
