February Pickups

Technically only one of these lots is a "February" pickup, but the new month has to start sometime, right?

photo 1_zps1e3722b0.jpg
Picked these up at a community yard sale for a dollar. The only other non-sports item I found at the entire venue (about 100 tables) was the front panel of a Beatles wrapper that had been cut out, pasted into a scrapbook, cut out of the scrapbook and wrapped in Scotch tape. I offered the guy a dollar for it; he informed me that it was "very rare" because it was "the only time all four Beatles ever appeared on a gum wrapper, and they only did one printing." He said he paid $50 for it ten years ago and wouldn't part with it for less than $30. I wished him the best of luck.

photo 2_zps36bb474a.jpg
I'm glad I finally have a couple of these for my type collection, but man, are they horrible! The "scenes" have almost no movement whatsoever. Seriously, in the "Monkee Salute" booklet, only one of the three Monkees pictured is actually moving at all, and even that's just incidental.

photo 3_zpsc49a32f3.jpg
A large lot of foreign issues from the '70s from the most recent BCB Auction. I wanted it mostly for the Tarzan and horror album stickers, but the other stickers and "cards" (paper cards, actually) are kind of interesting, too.

Wrappers from the lots above, along with a few extras, also from the BCB Auction.

photo 5_zps9ee4e1c0.jpg
Some tangentially related non-sports gumball machine issues.

photo 9_zpsdd0eeee5.jpg
The "Horrors of War" cards above are from the Canadian issue.

photo 10_zps2cb9f41c.jpg
Searched a long time for one of these.

photo 11_zpsb0d01c67.jpg
The back of the "Minute Men" coupon.

photo 12_zpsed526963.jpg
And finally, a nice lot of Kerr's Butter Scotch Airplanes.

Got a nice grouping from one of my favorite strip card sets, Commando Rangers. I'd love to someday complete this and its sister set Allies in Action.

Here's a card from a Canadian Broncho Bill set that I know nothing about. Any information would be greatly appreciated. -Jack J.

Great stuff Jack.........I finished Commando Ranger but find the evil stepsister set of Allies in Action to be particularly troublesome. Down to about 12-15 cards but geez.....they just don't come up often and there are more people (at least ME, YOU, ALAN MOON, EVIL MARTY) who are gobbling them up.........

Well, since I outed the Sterling lots, guess I should fess up on what I won...........

Three Bread lots...........
May have some dupes from the first two after I get them in if anyone wants to trade............

[linked image]

[linked image]

[linked image]

Would also be interested in any of the duplicate Weber Bread flags if anyone wants to trade......

And a couple of ebays.........

Nice N567 Newsboy Tall Ship........
[linked image]

Group of 50 or so Wannamaker flags......Horizontal flags and vertical crests......
Some Horizontal dupes available if interested........

A Billy the Kid produced by Wendy's back in the early 70's (at least that's what the ebay listing said). It's a lenticular card, so that's why it looks funny on a scan photo. Tilt it and a Billy the Kid portrait pops up.

Ron, I love your enthusiasm for the bird cards. But please don't tell me you purchased the 31 graded N4s for $1,950. All this seller's stuff is priced at 3X to over 10X of true value, that's why they have been listed for years and almost never sell. Same cards in that condition can be purchased for less than $600 and then can be graded for another $200. More fun that way too!

Wow. The postman brought five(!) different packages for me today. One was rather boring but cheap, but here are a couple of items selected from the other four.

Great stuff everyone, Jason-love the Arms of All nations set, it is a classic.

Alan- I had the same experience today, it reminds of the feeling I had as a kid on Christmas morning.

A few in the mail today...

Does anyone have information on the "Famous People Pictorial Stamp" in the center? It was new to me.

Found this 20.5"x20.5" pillow cover on a recent trip. Schwab Co. on the bottom. Tried to match up with S72 actress silks and other images in the gallery. No luck, but if someone recognizes the actress, please let me know.[linked image]

Some More Useful Birds

February 12 2014, 7:19 PM

James,

It wasn't me who purchased those. The seller has some neat cards, but not at those prices!

Ron

Here's the latest addition to the collection,
1936 Arm & Hammer Useful Birds of America, J9-4

On the back of the final card in this series, the text mentions the nearly-extinct status of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. Unfortunately, the last one was documented in 1944. Since then, the hope of the Woodpeckers existence has become legendary in the birding world. There have been everything from hoax sightings to multiple search expeditions. There are even rumours that the birds were regulary seen being shot by Mexican drug cartels in the mountains, but the areas are too dangerous to visit these days. The Ivory-billed Woodpecker has obtained mythical status since these cards were issued back in 1936.
