Greg,
Good haul! Those puzzles are wild. The Disney Sugar Daddy cards are tough.

Looks like Chuck has the Becker's all fixed already.

Like those flower silks. A couple silk sets I haven't started yet. Have some types from both but they are cool. The smaller set is tough from what I understand. Huylers has TONS and TONS of advertising out there. When I was collecting Candy, Gum and Chocolate "E" advertising more, there was just so much on Huylers. Great pickups!

September Pick-ups

September 9 2015, 1:14 PM

I picked up these two original art pieces from the U.K. set "Famous Escapes" by Mars Confections from 1937. These boards are about 7 inches by 14 inches and are beautiful pieces of card art. Overlaid on the first "Hereward the Wake" painting is an original card that matches the art. It's much easier to appreciate the artistic effort on the painting. I have always found the Pocahontas scene a most dramatic moment in American history, and is represented on some of my favorite cards.

There was a thread by Brian Pendreigh about these pieces in 2008 when he first obtained the art. I guess after seven years of ownership, he's letting them go for what I thought was a very reasonable price. He has sold a few pieces, but apparently still has many of them. It was a chance for me to add a couple of vintage pieces of nice watercolor art to my collection. They will frame up nicely. - Jack J.

Very cool McCormick punch out from Mr. Hardgrove. From 1951, meant to be used at young Jon's birthday party, but came to late in the mail. Thanks Jon!

Congratulations, JT!

Here are a few more items from me. The strip cards have some minor paper loss at the bottom, caused by unfortunate packaging by the seller. But between the chipping and water stains at the top, I doubt that hurts the value too much; I just liked the piece. The American Marvels of Nature, which look better in person than I could make them look in the photo, were a gift from a fellow collector, who can identify himself (or remain anonymous) if he wishes.

Jack - that art really looks neat. I bet it really looks great in person.

Jerry - that is so cool that that was Jon's when he was a child.

Jeff - Yes, I do like those Lion Coffee die-cuts. They did some pretty things.

JT - Congrats on finishing that set. It is really tough!

(Hey - what's with all the "J"'s? Maybe I need to change my name!)

Saturday pickups...

(Oooohhh, shiny!)

Todd - What series is that card from with the airplanes in the upper left-hand corner in the photo with all the Novel Candy cards? I saw one from that set for sale in a lot a couple months ago, and I know I've seen them before, but I can't place them.

An inauspicious box labelled "War Cards":

Yielded about 75% of a complete HOW set - with all of the "last page" (as Hugh Jones would say).

Thanks, Todd! That's why they looked familiar; I picked one up on vacation at a magic shop in California about six years ago.

Mark: Wow! Why can't I find innocuously marked boxes like that?
