19th Century Pack

No score for this post
July 13 2017, 11:28 PM

A not so common pack that dates between mid 1889 and early 1893 and a couple period coupons. Consols were a premium cigarette, selling for 15 cents per pack of 10 while other cigarette manufacturers were selling a pack of 10 for 10 cents, sometimes 5 cents.

Great pickup Joe! I've had a couple different of the packs with associated cards before but never the coupons from Consols.

The Consol's pack above. I've had at least a couple variations of that pack. I've also had the associated rolling papers from Consols that look like the pack as well. But haven't had the coupons that Joe pictures.

Barring a catastrophic shipping mishap, this should be arriving at my front door soon:

4WRUC5L.jpg

More than I wanted to pay, and a little more than the past couple have gone for, but I sensed the door may be closing on these soon, and now that my R37 and Heinz Map are fully paid for, freeing up a little more capital than I've had for the past few Hake's auctions, I didn't want to get shut out of crossing another "impossible" type off my dwindling want list.

Consols Cigarettes

No score for this post

Hello Tom,

The Consols coupons came from two sources, one from a large mixed lot in REA's Oct. 2016 auction and the other more recently in a group purchase from Rhett. While corresponding with other pack collectors it seems the Consols Cigarettes are tougher than the very similar cigars pack. I'm actually only aware of one other cigarettes pack. I'd love to know about any others. Speaking of Consolidated Cigarette Co., I'd really like to see a Paxi Cigarettes pack surface someday.

Here is the slide from the Consols Cigarettes pack, the inside advertises the Cigars which were introduced in June of 1889.

Joe & Jack, I suspect it might have something to do with my images being hosted on Net54 baseball site. It might be that if you log onto the baseball side you will see the images. I've posted maybe a dozen images from there over the last year and no one has ever said anything (about images not showing up).

Koberich Catalogs for German Cards

Score 5.0 (1 person)
July 15 2017, 5:49 PM

I have branched out into German cards and discovered Koberich's catalogs on German advertising and tobacco cards. I have a few more books from him on the way, but picked these up this past week directly from Mr. Koberich. Wish there were photos of the sets inside the catalog, but it is an easy reference system for the vast amounts of cards out there.

Koberich books

No score for this post
July 15 2017, 7:22 PM

I have been put off buying these books as I am told they do not list the individual sets in each album of cards. Could you explain the structure of the listings please? In a multi-set and multi-topic album (e.g. Palmin, Gartmann etc) are all of the sets within an album listed individually?

I too would be interested in how these catalogs are organized. I have several German cards from the 20's and 30's that PSA will not encapsulate due to lack of information (ie a checklist).

Köberich

No score for this post
July 16 2017, 4:13 AM

Andy, Frank,

The Köberich catalogs don't have checklists for individual cards in the sets. They are one level above that where they identify and catalog set names against manufacturers. For example, the cigarette manufacturer, Kios, is given a catalog number of #21124. Under Kios is listed 5 sets, -1 Hindenburg, -2 Schöne Fraun in der Kunst, -3 Klein-Spielkarten Romme, -4 Spielkarten, -5 Spielaufgaben.

Further, the 21124-1 Hindenburg set has the year (1934), number of cards/Bild (400) and Price (90€) indentified with the set.

It would be nice for complete checklists. The website Collector Sammel's Online Goody Box (www.csogb.co.uk) is taking a small step and trying to get photos documented with German sets, but it is far from complete. I'm not aware from my online research that checklists exist for individual sets in a purchasable form.

I hope this helps.

Don't know why I like the D49 "Know America's Defenders" insignia cards so much, but I'm always happy to add a couple to the collection.

July continues to be a good month for wrappers. Here is the 1 cent for R708-2A "New Funny Valentines" and the R790 Leaf "Pirates".

As an aside, when posting photos, I try to describe them so if anyone is searching, they can come up with the photos. Photos posted without description are easily lost to future viewers. - Jack J.
