I need information about getting help.

My left leg has been the one really affected by polio when I was 9 months old and my right leg has been the one carrying most of the load and lately my right ankle has been really sore so I went to my podiatry doctor for medical attention and he thinks that I've been overworking my right leg so he suggested that I should consider getting some kind of a brace to my affected leg so I can give my right leg a break as needed. After getting some evaluation with some of his colleagues and came up with what type of brace that could help me, they have found out later that my medical benefit does not pay for this type coverage so they dropped the ball on me. It's pretty pricey and I'm just wondering if anyone out there with information on how to get help for someone like me. I would really appreciate any kind of information I could get. Thank you.

Hello Keith and Gil............

April 3 2008, 8:54 AM

I sure would love to know how this came out and Gil asked a great question. I know for me the polio affected both legs and I have to wear full length metal braces. The cost......over $3000.00 for new braces every 6 years or so and over $1500 about every two years for releathering, cleaning and other repairs along with new leather shoes attached. I've been fortunate and have great benifits where I work. My Blue Cross Blue Shield pays for about 70% of the cost.

But now I'm worried, how can Gil and others get help on paying for braces, crutches, etc if they do not have medical insurance that will cover it all? If anyone has the answer I hope you will drop us a post.

Thanks!

Respectfully Yours,
