Olive Drab base coat, and in the Mediterranean theater, the most common were Sand, Earth Brown, and Earth Red, the exact color being chosen based on the topography of the area of operations. Individual US tank crews generally did not apply camouflage colors to their tanks. That was done by Corps of Engineers camouflage battalions, and most tank units in the field would not have the paint or equipment to paint their tanks. In North Africa the most common addition for US tanks was Sand. In Sicily, the Earth Red appears to have been more common. In photos, the Sand would be a high-contrast scheme, the Earth Red a low-contrast one.
