WIP Kettenkrad with PaK 36

I have been struggling to get motivated to finish my Tiger II (from the year of the tiger GB) to the poit where I had started to build 1/72 Airfix aircraft!

I thought a small quarter scale diversion would help me get back into the Tiger, so I picked up the Tamiya Kettenkrad and a Gas-O-Line PaK 36.

I have put down the initial faded German grey base with a field applied camouflage. weathering so far consists of Payne's grey and sand coloured washes. I'll do some dry brushing and some pastel work once I have added some decals for the number plates.

I am also planning on filling the back with stowage.

Here is a pic of the project so far.

I am planning on adding one of the TWM HG Trop infantry to make a small vignette.

Nice Idea

Hi Stuart

That's a really good combination and nicely done.

How did you find the Pak 36 kit to assemble? I've done resin before but shied away from guns (and motorbikes) because of cleaning up such delicate parts.

Thanks Nicholas,

It was inspired by a picture in the old Squadron/signal Afrikakorps in Action.

The PaK went together with no problems at all apart from the clean up for the gunners controls which was a bit fiddly as the casting blocks were bigger then the part, but really it wasn't a problem. I also had a few problems with the sit of the gun shield over the small armour plates attached to the axle. They didn't seem to fit with my reference photos, and as I had photos of guyns where they appeared to have been removed, I scraped them off.

The gunshield was probably a little on the thick side, but as the model it very small I cant see a solution that would retain the gun shield detail.

I'm enjoying this build a lot, it feels like a 1/72 armour build more than 1/48.

Cheers

Stu

Nice Idea reply

Hi Stuart

Thanks for that I've wanted to make one of the Pak 37mm guns but not been able to check the parts before buying. I think I'll give one a go. Maybe using the enormous hollow charge shell developed later in the war!

Great Idea

Nicholas,

I've seen some photos of re-enactors with a PaK 36 fitted with the hollow charge. It looks pretty mean. I look forward to seeing your model.

Stuart

It may be a while :-(

I'm not able to model-make at the moment as I've developed an intolerance to solvents in plastic cement and some fillers and paint. I'm still buying (of course) and planning what I'll do as soon as the hospital gives me the OK.

The good news is that it's usually reversable and once you've got through it there is rarely a reoccurance.

I'm checking out aircraft bombs to use as the body of the warhead, if I can find a good match the rest should be easy!
