Very many thanks for all of your helpful and constructive comments - really made deciding to join a new forum very worthwhile. Special thanks to Russell H for the kit, and to nzdavidh for the local encouragement - cheers guys - this one won't be headed for the Swanbank landfill after all!
Great work Ralph but sorry I have to "rain on your parade"

national insignia is wrong, blue segment is always heading front and read segment is always at the bottom (same as in the air force). Right now it's rather representing Netherlands than Czechoslovakia!
Hello Mario: very good to hear from you. This model has had so many mistakes - appreciate you spotting yet another one! This time I'm going to put the blame squarely on Tamiya though, as I applied the decals as per their instructions! Perhaps I should stick to aircraft from now on. Cheers, Ralph.
as I checked some period pix afterwards finding out that the ORIENTATION of the insignias is correct but Tamiya did switch the colors-top segment should be blue and RIGHT hand segment red i.e. insignias were NOT handed on the tank turret,
unlike on the a/c.
I checked some period pics after a similar issue came up on HS

It seems - regardless of if how the markings were supposed to be applied - they were applied inconsistently in practice (particularly to tanks). There is a nice propaganda black and white picture of this very vehicle but you'd need to rely on your knowledge of how red and blue translate in B&W to conclude Tamiya got it wrong.
