Tamiya's Discontinued 1/48 MM Items

Dear All,
I've composed a list of the Item #'s marked as "Discontinued" on the Tamiya USA website. I assume this means they are no longer producing this kit or making it available to dealers. I'm curious if anyone knows if Tamiya will reissue any of these or not. I encourage speculation as well happy.gif Some of these are just sad, unless they are planning to re-engineer and reissue them.

I'm also curious how many people have these kits in their stashes still and in what numbers.

89970 - US Modern 4x4 (HMMWV)
89755 - 1/4T 4x4 Light Vehicle (Jeep)
32539 - King Tiger "Porsche"
32536 - King Tiger "Production"
32537 - US M26 Pershing
32528 - British Cromwell
32527 - SU-122
32525 - StuG III Ausf G "Saukopf"
32524 - Pz.Kpfw III Ausf L
32522 - Jagdpanther
32520 - Panther
32518 - Pz.Kpfw IV Ausf J
32515 - T-34/76
32511 - Hetzer
32507 - StuG III Ausf B

Yours,
Shon

Any time your significant other asks why you buy kits.....

November 25 2014, 12:34 PM

you may not build for years, here's the answer..... They may not be available in future years. As to why these kits were dropped from the active stocks, who knows? It could be that they were popular and thus the first production runs are sold out and that's why there aren't any available now. Or perhaps they didn't sell as well or as quickly as Tamiya hoped, so when the first run sold out, they didn't run any more to keep the kits in stock. Whatever the reason, the loss of so many "family" kits, kits that could be converted into other versions, is a real loss not only to us but also to the aftermarket trade that depends on having the base kits available to sell their conversions. To drop the Pz III, Pz IV, StuG III and the JEEP is nuts to me, but then I'm not the most successful Japanese plastic model kit company either.

I have all I need and may adjust the stash as I am 74 next month and probably can't keep this up forever, but I am discovering the value of having stock to trade for items I want. I do sympathize with those who got into the One True Scale later and never had a chance to buy many of the discontinued kits, but when we geezers croak you'll have a second chance.....happy.gif

Still in my stash.........

November 27 2014, 1:50 AM

A HMMWV, Jeep and Pershing, which were all given to me by a friend only recently as he's gone off 1/48 armor and wanted to get rid of them. His loss and my gain, YAY!

Don't believe everything you read...they are not discontinued just not in production...if the demand is there then they will be reissued.

As for Bruce feeling he is getting older...don't be silly...you will be modeling long after I am gone as you have 24 years on me wink.gif Plus, someone with all your knowledge and good natured attitude has to stick around for at least another 100 years...who else will preserve history so well???

Finally, like many, my stash has far more kits then I will ever build...and I just bought some more recently...but that is the fun of the hobby too...dreaming about projects you may never get to!

Aside from Tamiya, one sad thought I have is that AFV Club decided to drop 1/48...the Skybox rebox Tigers were excellent...and their Sturmtiger really good...and their 251/1 outstanding (despite those tracks)...and I wish they would have kept at it. If they had done with the 251 in 1/48 what they did in 1/35 then we would have had all the different versions...very sad they didn't get the sales numbers needed to stick with it.

Well, my mother died recently aged 99 years and 4 months....

but I didn't get ALL the designer genes.....happy.gif I plan to model as long as I can and contribute as much as possible to this great hobby. And drive my 1942 Kubelwagen replica, now being built in New Mexico.....happy.gif Film at 11.....

Metal Hull?

December 10 2014, 8:32 PM

I'm wondering what these kits may have in common.
Which of them, DO NOT have the metal hull?
Maybe those with that feature are being
withdrawn for now and will later be re-released
in an all-styrene form.

Just wondering...

All of them except the Jeep had the metal hull, I believe

December 11 2014, 2:06 PM

Even the trucks came with metal hulls/parts in them to give them weight. I expect at some point all of them will be re-released. I have the original PZ IV, but there are new PZ IV variants out that have plastic hull parts.

HTH,

Scott Gentry

The codes for the jeep and HMMWV are for limited edition kits anyway. The jeep is usually included in one of the US figure sets.

Re: Tamiya's Discontinued 1/48 MM Items

January 19 2015, 5:24 AM

Well I'm a late bloomer in this scale, I was doing 1/72nd for years but I can't work at that scale anymore as well as I want to (I'm not that old either) but I'm really liking 1/48th and I'm slowly tracking down a small amount of those kits.
I hope that Tamiya and others keep producing these kits.

Wish I could find a Tamiya Jagdpanther! ... just eBay'd a Bandai Jadgpanther, hopefully I can work my magic on it and make something nice of it?
