Hello Geoff:

I am Doug Grossinger, an attorney in Philadelphia. I reviewed your web site and was impressed. I have been golfing for 32 of my 38 years and also have been a talent and graphics statistician for CBS Sports golf on Chirkinian, Barrows, and Will crews since the mid-1980s continuing to date. I thought maybe you could be of assistance on a matter for me. My father-in-law Meyer Hodes, M.D. grew up in Cape Town, then was in Nick Price's hometown of Harare, Zimbabwe for 20 years prior to moving to Long Island in the late 1970s. He always liked Bobby Locke and I have been trying to get a Bobby Locke autrograph for many years. I understand that it may be expensive because they are no longer being generated but I wanted to see if you knew a place I could get one. Please let me know. You may e-mail back or call me. Thanks. I am willing to pay a fair amount for this as I noted.

Best regards,

Doug

Locke Memorabilia Leads

October 14 2002, 9:27 AM

Hi Doug,

Thanks for asking me about Bobby Locke. There is a Locke signature for sale as part of an album of players in the 1936 British Open (see below), and I think I have the important information you need to help you find what you're looking for among other sources as well.

First, there has been a Philadelphia Private Golf Museum that purchased a number of Bobby Locke memorabilia items some time ago, and has been offering them for sale. The old URL follows, but I don't think it is still active.

Second, Gary Player, South Africa's successor to Bobby Locke, is going to auction off all his golf memorabilia soon, through Christie's of London. Player doubtless has many fine Bobby Locke items.

Third, Brenda and George Blumberg of Johannesburg, SA, have long been associated with professional golf in South Africa, including the Locke family. George died a few years ago, and Brenda died last week. Surely, in the estate, there must be many Bobby Locke memorabilia.

Fourth, Bobby Locke died in 1987. Six years later, his wife and daughter, under pressure of necessitous circumstances related to the turmoil in SA, sold a great many personal memorabilia items through Christie's in July 1993. There is still a catalog available, if that interests you.

Fifth, there is a country club in South Africa, Clovelley CC, that has a bar named for Locke decorated with Locke memorabilia.

Sixth, the Australian caricaturist Tony Rafty currently offers for sale caricatures of Bobby Locke that he drew in the 1960s (I beleive) that are signed by Locke.

Seventh, there are some auction catalogs with Locke items that give you some idea of market values in fairly recent days. The 1936 item is currently for sale.

There are several major dealers in golf antiguities and collectibles in the US. Jeff Ellis, Chuck Furjanic, and Leo M. Kelly Jr. I've looked over their current offerings and didn't spot any Locke signatures, but maybe I missed something. At any rate, you probably want to advise them of your interest, in case they have something or will see something in the future.

Also, it also pays to keep an eye on the Sports memorabilia (Golf) section on eBay, http://www.eBay.com. A sale just closed recently of a Locke signature and photo that sold for about $40. Maybe the purchaser would sell it to you, if you want it. This buyer has acquired a few Bobby Locke items, so he is probably a collector of Lockeiana. Or perhaps the seller has another item. You can email either through eBay by clicking on their name (so long as you are registered at eBay -- if not, let me know and I'll hail them for you). LINK: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1865853775.

There is probably a copy of Locke's book that he signed as author available. I use Bookfinder.com, http://www.bookfinder.com, for general survey purposes. One appears to be offered for $281 by a UK bookdealer PRulton, available through ABEBooks, http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BookDetails?bi=93300673&ccreate=Y. The description reads:

Locke. Bobby.:
Bobby Locke On Golf.
London. Country Life. 1953 1st ed.Hardback. A very good book with no dust wrapper. The book has a small inscription from the previous owner. It is also inscribed by the Author " To Mrs Lyon with all Good Wishes. From Bobby Locke 1954. "

Let me know if there is something else I can do. Good hunting, and Cheers!
