Long Putters, MEM Putters

Hi Geoff

When you respond to Jase's query on the Make Everything Putter, could you address the whole question of using a long putter?

I understand that there are essentially 3 reasons for using the long putter. Bad back (Rocco Mediate), yips (Bernard Langer), and putt better (Scott McCarron - says he can use the short putter, but putts better with long one). There also seem to be 3 variations in the use of the long putter. Right hand grip, stance (open, square or side-saddle), and power source (rocking shoulders versus right arm).

Bill Woodley, former coach of the University of Arkansas for 11 years, originated the design for the MEM putter. He had all the Razorbacks using it on the team. There was one problem with the putter I saw and that was where the grip was fixed to the shaft. There was a metal surround at the putterhead end of the single grip and this would scratch the graphite shaft of the driver when in the bag. Perhaps they have dispensed with this now, and use a double grip.
I would appreciate your views of the pros and cons of the long putter. I have read that today bad backs are now the second largest cause of absenteeism in the US workforce.

Kind regards

Neville
