Straight Stroke and True Plane Trainer - Conflict?

Hi Geoff, I have a question about the true planer putting trainer.

I qoute you:

The aid is based on the notion that a good pendulum stroke has the shoulders moving in an inclined plane and the putterhead path straight-back and straight-through within that inclined plane, but the path describes an elliptical arc as seen from directly above.

I qoute the true plane website:

Sliding the putter along the guide means that your putter follows a perfect plane - the ideal path. The putter will travel along the target line at impact, and will swing naturally inside on the backswing and on the follow through.

It seems there is some kind of inconsistency here. Do you preach the tool or not? Does it teach a straight stroke or not?

No Conflict

Dear Bastiaan,

Yes, and yes.

I believe the true plane tool actually teaches a VERTICAL-PLANE stroke action of the shoulder sockets and that the statement that the putterhead will swing naturally inside on the backswing and on the follow through" cannot literally be true. The heel of the putterhead afterall is resting against a plane of plexiglass, so it cannot possibly come closer to the golfer's feet. But with a TILTED-PLANE shoulder action, the heel of the putter will in fact come closer to the feet as the backstroke progresses, even as the intersection of the plane of motion with the green surface is parallel to or matches the line of the putt. The trajectory of the putterhead and putter heel in that case would come closer to the feet as the backstroke (or thrustroke) progresses. I believe that Dr Brooks simply makes a slight misstatement here.

If this is unclear, let me know and I'll try to be clearer.

Cheers!

Thanks, I have More Questions

October 8 2003, 7:04 AM

Hi Geoff,

I'm glad you made that clear to me. But in general, I still have a lot of questions about your theory. It's not that I don't believe your theory; it's more that my english is not sufficient, which makes it hard to understand your theory.

So maybe you have a simple version of the straigth stroke theory available?

If not, do you mind me asking some questions (in the next email(s))?

Greetings from The Netherlands,

Bastiaan van Slobbe

Ask Away!

Dear Bastiaan,

Certainly! Ask all the questions you want. Perhaps I can translate some of my stuff to Dutch and send it to you.

My wife and I were in Amsterdam this summer! (Our second visit of many to come.)

Cheers!
