Geoff Mangum's Flatstick Forum: Interesting results

Geoff,

I recently started looking at your web site and reading all of the material you have here. I have to say that I'm really impressed with the knowledge you've acquired.

I play in an industrial leagure every Thursday (9 holes) and yesterday was the first time I've really had a chance to use your principles since I first went to PuttingZone.com.

To say the results were amazing doesn't even begin to cover it. I only had 2 pars, one double-bogey and 6 birdies! I'm a scratch golfer and a couple of my birdie putts were closer than 5 feet (my closest birdie putt was 2 feet, the result of my eagle putt), but the other 4 were anywhere from 8 to 15 feet. My double included a 3-putt (just missed the par on a fast downhill putt....felt like Phil on 17 on Sunday!) but I only had a total of 13 putts for 9 holes. I shot 32 but it easily could have been a 28 or 29.

Granted, my iron play kept my putt length fairly close, but until now, I've never putted this well from those distances. I even had 2 sandy birdies!

For me, the three keys I'm using now are:

1. "The Gaze". I'm still not sure why this works but I'm not going to stop.
2. Starting my left shoulder back, which really helps me start the putter going straight back.
3. Starting with my Core Putt and determining my feel from there. For me, allowing the putter to "fall" from the top of the stroke also keeps it more on line.

I hope to incorporate more of your ideas into my putting as I go along. If I go to Charlotte for that project, now I definitely want to get together with you.
