New Rule Changes

Far Hills, N.J.–-The United States Golf Association and The R&A*, golf’s governing bodies, have announced 111 changes to the book “Decisions on the Rules of Golf,” published every two years and effective for all golfers starting Jan. 1, 2006. The 2006-2007 Decisions book includes 37 new Decisions and 66 revised Decisions, while eight Decisions have been withdrawn.

Here are a couple...
Decision 16-1e/2...helps the player who makes a putting stroke with his feet inadvertently positioned on an extension of the line of putt behind the ball, something often done to avoid standing on another player’s line of putt. In this instance, the player will not now be penalized under Rule 16-1e, which has as its true purpose the prevention of “croquet style” putting.

This one really caught my eye...
Decision 14-3/0.5...The United States Golf Association (USGA) has confirmed that measuring devices, such as GPS systems or laser rangefinders--will be permitted for use at the discretion of tournament organizers. This announcement represents a tremendous step for golf in recognizing the continued role technology can play in furthering the skills of players at all levels. This applies to devices that measure distance only, not any other conditions that might affect a player’s play (e.g., wind or gradient).

The jury is still out for me on the rangefinders...often thought it would be neat to have one, but not sure it will help the pace of play. I wonder if these devices might slow the game down? The GPS system in power carts is okay as they provide immediate yardage when you pull up alongside your ball, but I question 4 golfers standing out in the fairway with their hand-held rangefinders!?

Sky Caddie

I just picked up one of those Sky Caddies and I think it's great. I've noticed about 20 minutes of faster play, although I'm a pretty fast player to begin with when the larger groups actually let me through. Anyway, it's helped my game too with better club selection and quicker pace. It also allows you to find out EXACTLY how far you hit each of your clubs. If it could only putt for me....
