Morton Rothstein of the University of Wisconsin's History Department is a specialist in foreign investment in American agrarian business, and this article on the firm that Alexander Baillie worked for covers the capital investment of Balfour, Guthrie and Company in the Tacoma / Steattle area at the time Alexander Baillie was their "man in Tacoma." I think Professor Rothstein may be deceased, but perhaps the History Department at the University can help (

1909 map of Tacoma area with railroad lines
This is a great big old 1909 map of Pierce County Washington showing Tacoma and the railroads and other details, including American Lake CC 10 or so miles south of Tacoma.
Tacoma area aerial photography of American Lake, north shore
This is a very detailed aerial photography databank for the Tacoma area. American Lake's north shore is under Steilacoom NW and Tacoma SW images (about 35-40 MB each) with zooming very close in onto building and golf courses. The Tacoma G & CC is north of the northern shore of American Lake (oriented east west) about a half a mile at the top left of the Steilacoom NW images and the bottom right of the Tacoma SW image. The greatest part of the course, including the clubhouse and parking lot, is in the Tacoma SW image.
