Current Putter(s)

January 13 2008, 5:18 AM

Dear KOC,

These are the main ones I'm using these days:

Q-Roll Putter Classic IV flattop grip
Quantum Putter round grip
American Putter midsize Golf Pride flattop grip
Arnold Palmer leather spiral wound grip

I am also always trying out / testing new putters and old putters too.

Cheers!

From the best I can tell

Qroll IV putter is faced-balance

Quantum Putters - don't have any info on face? Do you know? Which model do you have?

American Putters are all faced-balance. Which model do you have?

Arnold Palmer is NOT faced-balance much like the Sophia by Yes!. Which model do you have?

Is the above correct?

For a Square-Square shoulder vertical stroke, what is your choice for new students?

Has anyone here tried the "two thumb" grips that get the arms, hands and shoulders at same level? Wouldn't this be beneficial when advancing Geoff's techniques?

2-Thumbs

January 18 2008, 2:02 PM

I've been using the 2 Thumbs putter grips for the last couple of weeks. It made a lot of sense to me (I've gone to Geoff's Pendulum stroke as of a month ago), particularly the way in which it levels out the shoulders and helps keep the hands out of the stroke. I had tried using a similar hand positioning with my regular putter grips and although I could do it, using the 2 Thumbs provides a more secure grip and helps "lock" the hands in place without undue tension.

I don't have any "hard data" yet in the way of results, but I believe it's a great complement to the pendulum stroke. I believe you'll see a few of these on tour before long.

FYI - I'm using the "Shorty" model. It's not as long than the other models so it's lighter. These grips are on the heavy side (125 gms and higher) so you will get a different feeling of the overall weight and swingweight of whatever you put it on. That can be an issue with some.

Re: 2-Thumbs

I've been working on the "two pistoleros" grip described in Geoff's book, for the past while.

My (current) favourite putter has a narrow ("normal") grip, so 2-thumbs doesn't work with it.

I have found that with the "two pistoleros" grip, I can lay my right-hand thumb (I'm right-handed) directly over my left-hand thumb so that my right-hand thumb pad is on the grip directly below the left hand thumb. My right-hand thumb first knuckle is at the tip of the left-hand thumbnail and the right-hand thumb bends downward to meet the grip from that point. Both thumb pads are on the top of the grip directly in line with one another, the left thumb-knuckle higher on the shaft than the right by one thumb knuckle.

This feels comfortable to me. It works well on carpets and indoor golfing facilities. We'll see how it works on real golf courses in the spring...
