The 1986 Masters

In 1986 Jack Nicklaus became the oldest man to win the Masters and make it an historic event. Jack had used a putter with a gigantic blade of about 6-8" in length! It was a MacGregor Response Putter and I believe that during the Masters telecast, someone had said that Jack had even painted the blade black. His putting was tremendous that day and many thought that his large zinc putter was part of the reason. Minutes after his victory, many golfers including me ran to the pro shops to purchase one. Most shops were sold out immediately; however, I did eventually own one. Jack's signature was reproduced very nicely on the bottom of the blade. It seemed to be well-balanced and did putt very well; however, I could not bring myself to carry around that gargantuan putter in my bag, as I could putt just as well with my old standby. I was wondering if anyone here had experimented with the Response Putter or maybe still own one? Would like your thoughts on that putter?

My New Response Putter

May 11 2001, 6:26 PM

Well, it's not really new, but I'm excited about owning one again. I was fortunate to be the high bidder at an auction on another site last night. It is used, but described as in very good condition. I wanted it mainly as a conversation piece as it just seems like the most unlikely putter that could win a Masters. The rest of Jack's game was good that day, but many would say that it won the '86 Master's for him. And at the young age of about 46! I consider Jack to be one of the great putters of our time and I think that he may have won the Master's with any putter that day.
Geoff, looking forward to your response about the Response.

My son bought me that putter in 1986. I have putted with it since that time. It still has the best feel and balance of any putter I have ever tried to use. I would not think about playing without my old friend. So here is one golfer that is using that putter and all I ever do is ever so often I change the grip. Great putter. Dick Horn
