CULT CLAIMS SURFACE IN WNB

A CULT movement has reportedly surfaced in the Silanga hinterlands between Kimbe and Bialla in West New Britain province, police have revealed.
The movement similar to the Black Jesus cult in Madang had lured young boys and girls and some older people to worship one Andrew Sebamanu as their “Jesus”, police said.
According to reports, the cult movement was launched on Jan 7 at Silanga in front of more than 700 people and witnessed by a local Catholic priest and representatives from other denominations.
A policeman who was in the area, said that during the launching, “Andrew Sebamanu” was carried around on a platform by his followers.
The policeman said that during the process, coins were thrown out to his followers and the crowd who gathered to witness the occasion.
The policeman who witnessed the incident, said the placards carried the name of Sebamanu as their ‘Jesus’ who was sent by God to preach his gospel to the small people.
He said one of the placards read “Jisas makim ol lain bilong em pinis, nau bai mi makim ol lain bilong mi” (“Jesus chose his people already, and now I will chose mine”).
Another placard read, “God chose me (Sebamanu) to be Jesus and I will select my people to worship God the source”.
Two other people, who come from the area, said the Bible’s 10 Commandments were abused by the group by changing the wordings.
Mary Koholo and James Imanai claimed the cult and Sebamanu had rewritten the 10 commandments bearing his name instead of God.
They claimed Sebamanu told his followers to contribute a tonne of oil palm fresh fruit bunch to him so that they would live in permanent houses after a few years time.
Catholic priest Fr Boniface Kolomu confirmed the report but denied that it was a “Black Jesus” or a cult movement.
Fr Kolomu, who was there to witness the event, said Sebamanu was a Catholic and had asked the church to share a vision he had.
Fr Kolomu said the church had given Sebamanu the opportunity to share the vision.
He said that did not mean that the church believed what Sebamanu was saying.
Fr Kolomu denied that Sebamanu said that he was Jesus.
He said what the man said was ,‘I was chosen by God to talk about the 10 Commandments’.”
West New Britain provincial police commander Sylvester Euga said he was waiting for a report from the Kapiura rural police commander before deciding on the next course of action.
