AFTER 10 years without telecommunication services, the Rigo district of Central province is now linked to the rest of PNG and the world, thanks to local MP Ano Pala.
Mr Pala, who is also the Vice-Minister for Mining, yesterday launched the fixed telephone line services for Rigo district at Kwikila station, and he did it with a phone call to MP for Abau and Deputy Prime Minster Dr Puka Temu, who was driving from Abau. The conversation was broadcast live on FM 100. Mr Pala said: “Today marks a fundamental achievement that would allow us to move forward in our development, a step that people needed in the past 10 years.
“We need to have effective service delivery mechanisms in place.”
Dr Temu commended Mr Pala “for a real achievement for the people of Rigo”.
The acting Prime Minster said communication in any form was a powerful tool for development.
Dr Temu said it was a concerted effort of the Somare-Temu Government to make telecommunications readily available to the people of PNG.
He urged the people of Rigo to stand behind their MP “so that they can fully realise the socio-economic development that would truly sustain them economically”.
The installation of the telephone services cost Mr Pala K80,000.
An internet servicce hook-up is expected soon.
