A MOTHER died instantly when she was struck on the neck and head while holding on tightly to her nine-month-old baby in the Gulf province last Friday.
Police said the 22-year-old single mother’s brain spilled out from the cracked skull after she was struck with a knife by a man at Santo Maria in the Malalaua district at about 4.30pm.
The baby was still crying in the mother’s arm when they were found by the suspect’s father.
Police said the mother and her baby were chased into the bush by the suspect but unfortunately could not escape or hide quickly as she was carrying the baby.

She had her neck and head slashed with a knife after the suspect caught up with her.
Police said that the suspect was on his way to the garden with his father and was about 100m ahead of his father when he saw the mother and baby and chased them.
His father then chased him into the bush and sought assistance from the villagers to bury the mother.
Community police officers based in the area then apprehended the suspect, who is now in police custody at Malalaua police station awaiting charges to be laid on him.
The deceased is from Kemo village in the neighbouring Kaintiba district but was residing at Miriware village when she was killed.

Totally sickening story!! - what was the motive? poor journalisim I might add.
