OK, so anyone in the western world with a computer or television is aware that plans are underway to make J.R.R. Tolkien's the Hobbit into two full-length feature films directed by Guillermo del Toro. There are a few casting decisions already made for the film, but here are my thoughts on who should make up the rest of the cast:
Already cast:
Gandalf- Ian McKellen. Duh.
Gollum- Andy Serkis. Double Duh.
Elrond- Hugo Weaving. Obviously.
New Casting Ideas:
Bilbo Baggins- James McAvoy. Great actor. Awesome in Atonement, Narnia, and Wanted. Looks perfect for the part and could make the case for being a younger version of Elijah Wood's uncle. Star on the rise. Would knock it out of the park.
Thorin- Ron Perlman. He's already been cast in the movie and I'm guessing this is his role. Good actor, lot of range, experience with del Toro.
Bard- Hugh Jackman. An Aragorn-esque character. The only significant human role, so needs to be good. Brings automatic star power and action clout.
Thranduil (Legolas' father, king of the elves)- Ralph Fiennes. If any actor was born to play an elf king it was Ralph Fiennes. Thranduil is regal and creepy at the same time. If that doesn't make you think of Fiennes I don't know what does.
Voice of Smaug- James Earl Jones. Yeah, I know. Reeks of Darth Vader, etc. But really, who has a better voice? Well, Ian McKellen's pretty good, but it would be kinda weird if Smaug sounded like Gandalf.
Beorn- Brian Blessed. Is the idea of Brian Blessed turning into a bear really all that implausible? He's got a pretty good voice himself.
Please share your thoughts and ideas.
