you could do as SM said or you could make yourself one of those little lap quilts to start out with. It wouldn't take so much material and you can still see how it looks. A lap quilt would probably consist of 8 to 10 square maybe a little more. That way you could get the benefit of seeing how warm a larger one would be. Just a thought my friend.
