Hi Mermayd! :) ...

November 3 2009, 5:54 PM

It's kind of neat you asked because he went in today for the assessment.  I go in again tomorrow (by myself) to see the results and what they recommend to help my son. I'm anxious to see what they have to say. I'll let you know what they say.

The assessment ....

November 4 2009, 11:58 AM

seems pretty accurate to me. He told me everything about my son after spending only 1 hour with him, that took me years to realize. He did all kinds of test. Christian's results are average in some areas, some below average, and there was one result that indicated that he was higher then the average. Average meaning compared to other children in his age group.

Anyway what they do at this place is teach the children how to really "learn" before they teach him anything else.  They believe that after doing my son's assessment that he has the capability to be reading and writing at grade level without any difficulties.

Some of his below average weaknesses were "auditory memory for spoken letters or numbers". Here they will teach him to break down information, learn "exact" thinking, and learn problem solving techniques.

He also was below average with visual memory "that is not conceptually meaningful".

He was below average in "oral vocabulary and language skills". They will help him develope vocabulary and language.

He was above average on the TONI test however. TONI = Test Of Nonverbal Intelligence. This has to do with his reasoning skills.

Everything else he was average in. They believe they can help him. I'm going to run these results by my dh and hopefully enrol him in the program by the end of this week. I'll sign him up for a year and then go from there. He may not need to go much longer than that. They also do assessments every 6 weeks. It all sounds good. I have hope.

He ..

November 5 2009, 10:37 AM

is shy in new circumstances and in unfamiliar places, but in every day life he isn't. Like at school he isn't at all unless the teacher asks him a question then he speaks quietly. I think that he does that though because he's afraid he will get the wrong answer. His self confidence is going down the tubes fast. He's shy around adults I think too, because when I gave him money the other day to buy a poppy ( for Rememberance Day) he was shy about putting it in the box that the man was holding, so I did it for him. And when we go to the store and I give him money for a goodie, he doesn't like to pay for it himself, but I usually encourage him too anyway. But around children he's not shy at all. He likes to make everyone laugh, no matter how silly he has to be to accomplish that. His very best friend is a really shy boy around adults too. However, he has no problem speaking in front of the church congregation, he really surprises me that way, and I think he does well with speeches at school too. He doesn't think anything of doing that sort of thing. So I think perhaps yes, in some ways that he is; yet he likes attention too. That was a hard question ..hehe!

Daisy, this is

November 5 2009, 2:18 PM

exactly the sort of thing you needed to find out! When they know exactly what is going on, then they can set about treating it. They will give him strategies and "tools" to overcome whatever difficulty he is having. You will see, he will catch up quickly! Unfortunately, the schools often do "guesswork" and extra tutoring to try and remediate, but often they do not address the underlying problem!! As one specialist told me once, they figure they have 12 years to "address your problem" then they wash their hands of it! It's your child and you need to make sure he is learning! It sounds like this learning center is on the ball. I hope he progresses quickly - I'm sure that he will! Most kids do when their needs are actually being met!!

As I mentioned before Daisy

November 6 2009, 7:06 PM

the tutoring for Dylan did a world of good and I hope and pray you have the same results.

I think he gained as much from the learning how to study as he did the actual tutoring. In fact I think he gained more from the skills he learned regarding studying and organization.

I think girls are generally just naturally more skilled at multitasking. When boys hit grades where organization becomes an issue their grades seem to fall in general. (obviously some boys are just naturally organized but I think in general their not as good at multi tasking)

I hope this works as well for you as it did for us. I have to admit, Dylan was really burned out of going so this year I told him he didn't have to go to Sylvan as long as his grades were A's and B's. To be honest I think the "threat" of having to return to Sylvan motivated him as much as anything else! (Oh well, what ever works, right?)

I also explained to him that if he's having trouble in something to tell me right away before it becomes a problem and we could go to Sylvan for just a couple of times to get him back on track. (He was initially three days a week for close to 6 months) He actually told me recently he missed it "a little".

When my son was younger I did the tutoring and it wasn't as successful. I'm not sure why. It wasn't with Sylvan so I'm not sure if it was the instuctors or the methods, this was almost 20 years ago now. I think it helped but not quite as much as with Dylan. Dylan's first report card this year was almost all "A's" I think he had one "B".

We have a way to check their grades everyday through "RenWeb". Do you have that at your school? It helps because I can go online and see what he's turned in, if all his homework is getting done and hopefully catch any problems before they become a major problem.

This weekend I'll be "assisting" in making a pyramid. I HATE THE pyramid making!!!!! AND the science fairs. I've handed these projects over to my husband! happy.gif
