the tutoring for Dylan did a world of good and I hope and pray you have the same results.
I think he gained as much from the learning how to study as he did the actual tutoring. In fact I think he gained more from the skills he learned regarding studying and organization.
I think girls are generally just naturally more skilled at multitasking. When boys hit grades where organization becomes an issue their grades seem to fall in general. (obviously some boys are just naturally organized but I think in general their not as good at multi tasking)
I hope this works as well for you as it did for us. I have to admit, Dylan was really burned out of going so this year I told him he didn't have to go to Sylvan as long as his grades were A's and B's. To be honest I think the "threat" of having to return to Sylvan motivated him as much as anything else! (Oh well, what ever works, right?)
I also explained to him that if he's having trouble in something to tell me right away before it becomes a problem and we could go to Sylvan for just a couple of times to get him back on track. (He was initially three days a week for close to 6 months) He actually told me recently he missed it "a little".
When my son was younger I did the tutoring and it wasn't as successful. I'm not sure why. It wasn't with Sylvan so I'm not sure if it was the instuctors or the methods, this was almost 20 years ago now. I think it helped but not quite as much as with Dylan. Dylan's first report card this year was almost all "A's" I think he had one "B".
We have a way to check their grades everyday through "RenWeb". Do you have that at your school? It helps because I can go online and see what he's turned in, if all his homework is getting done and hopefully catch any problems before they become a major problem.
This weekend I'll be "assisting" in making a pyramid. I HATE THE pyramid making!!!!! AND the science fairs. I've handed these projects over to my husband!
