I guess I forgot to say that the passenger manifest was from the Ellis Island web site, which you can search for free, only need to register. I used this site to do the searchhttp://stevemorse.org/
which makes it so easy. I selected the Ellis Island White Page option, where you can enter just part of a name, and also have options to enter variables such as age, gender, etc.
The census I can access on-line thru my local library web site, which offers Heritage Quest for free, but it only goes up to 1920. Check with your local library and see if they have it in your area.
