  • History Question

I was re-reading John's answer (amazing, I might add -- are you a professor?) and am wondering if I could bother someone for a little history lesson.

I know that my grandmother (born 1902) considered herself "Lithuanian" and my grandfather (born about 1889) did too. Sooo..... if there wasn't such a thing as "Lithuania" at that time, how did they recognize themselves as Lithuanian and not Russian?
