I was at the Lithuanian Archives in Vilnius a year ago, and they told me that the parish records for my great-grandmother's village (Svaiginiai) were located in Poland. So, I sent an e-mail to the Polish Archives (in Suwalki), and got this response:
Niestety nie możemy Panu pomóc nie posiadamy akt parafii Sudargi z pow. Władysławów. Akt tych proszę szukać na Litwie w Archiwum Hisporycznym.
I assume that "Hisporycznym" is actually "Historycznym", but beyond that, I am having a tough time making a clean translation.
The SGKP reference for this village says: Svaiginiai (Swajginie) - a peasant village in Władyslawów (Kudirkos Naumiestis) powiat, gmina Kidule, parish Sudargi(Sudargas), 30 km from Władyslawów. It has 4 houses, 39 inhabitants and 264 morgas of land. It used to be a part of the goverment estate Kidule.
Am I correct to assume that I need to go to Poland for these parish records? Any help or advice would be great!
