They judge popularity, but very little beyond that, because people just don't know enough

Response to Whats wrong with polls?

If the subject was Obama's handling of the Chrysler bankruptcy situation, would you rather have a poll of 1,000 average Americans or 25 bankruptcy attorneys?

If the subject was Obama's handling of the economy, would you want a poll of 1,000 average Americans, or 50 economists and 50 financial experts?

It's a question of form or substance. The poll results of 1,000 average Americans will give you a taste of if the average American thinks you're doing a good job, or if you are likely to be re-elected by the populous. But the other polls, with only people who understand the subject matter voting in them, will give you a feel for IF YOU ARE ACTUALLY DOING A GOOD JOB.

What's more important? The form? Or the substance?
