The question is, WHO actually supports tax increases at a time we are struggling to work our way out of a recession? We need job growth very badly, and tax increases are anti-job growth. I am not saying that they need to made permanent (what's really "permament" anyway?), but to let them expire now is just politically and economically irresponsible.
The problem is the Dems have painted themselves into the proverbial corner on this issue. After 8 years of criticizing the Bush tax cuts "for the weathiest Americans" blah, blah, blah, can they now admit that the tax cuts were not, and are not, really just for the wealthiest Americans? And admitting that letting them expire would hurt the economic recovery is tantamount to admitting that the reason Bush proposed them in the first place, to help us out of the last recession, was sound.
An interesting quandary for the Dems. |
