Keningau: Various attractions have been lined up for the inaugural Koningau Festival here, on Dec 9-10.
Disclosing this here, Thursday, district protocol officer Manan Noor said the festival is being organised by the Keningau District Office, in collaboration with the District Tourism Council and Keningau Tourist Association, at the Tamu Ground hall.
The programme also features Koningau dinner function, Koningau beauty pageant, lantern festivity, a photography competition and decorate floats.
There will also be exhibitions of products and local produce by the regional cooperatives, the private sector, associations and Government agencies. Further details are available from the District Office, tel 087-301504/301507.
Koningau is a popular term among the Hokkien community, derived from the cinnamon tree, that is endemic in the district. After World War II, the British colonial administration renamed the district Keningau.
The history of cinnamon goes back a long way to the Ming Dynasty which established a trade relations with the Brunei sultanate which ruled most of Sabah before the British East India Company came over in 1881.
The cinnamon, or kayu manis, is said to be a popular ingredient for food items, as well as traditional Chinese medicine in China and the Asia Pacific region.

The name Keningau derives from the word ‘Koningau' which means cinnamon. The district was once the largest producer of cinnamon in Sabah and these were the times when the Pesta Keningau (Keningau Festival) was celebrated.
This month, join the people of Keningau as they revive this age-old tradition. Enjoy a fun line-up of activities including a cinnamon product exhibition, photography competition, handicraft exhibition and a night of cultural performances as well as the crowning of the local beauty queen. The event will take place at the Keningau Community Hall and Keningau Cinnamon Hill.
