Then name a topic for a debate, Gman.

by Lemuel G. Abarte (no login)

How about this: Is American presence in the Philippines or interference in Philippine affairs ever improved the condition of Filipinos and the Philippine economy?

How about this: Should Americans stay in Iraq?

How about this: Should foreigners pay taxes in the Philippines for buying Philippine property?

How about this: Was Vietnam ever justified?

How about this: Should the CIA stay within the bounds of Christian ethics?

What the Americans should do......

by Gman (no login)

Whatever the hell we want to do, is what we will do. We don't take any advice from half educated people. We should make a parking lot out of Iraq, as well as Iran.

Here is a good topic for debate. How many coconuts must a monkey pick to have 30 pesos to use a cyber cafe? That is a topic that possibly you might be an expert on, as everything else you discuss is far larger than your tiny mind is capable of understanding.

by Gman (no login)

Gross assets and investment earnings......Here is an example: Little monkey has 20 coconuts at 5 pesos each. This equals 100 pesos. The monkey also has a bamboo hut worth 500 pesos....The monkey is stupid and uneducated so that is all he owns. The monkey is also lazy and has no job. So, the monkey Groos assets is 600 pesos. The monkey owes 1000 pesos to a store for debts such as rice, dried fish and lots of Tanduay Rhum. So the monkeys net worth is -400 pesos. The monkey is a loser and should shoot himself! ha ha ha

A dialogue with Alecks Pabico of the PCIJ:

Alecks : You're a repeat offender, Benign0. I've lost count how many times I've had to come in to remind some of you here, especially you, of the rules of the blog. So don't give me this crap and pretend that you never felt alluded to. No point arguing your case now.

benign0 : Suit yourself Alecks. I would have thought though that FACTS are a staple of "investigative" journalists. Just noticed though, Alecks, that you guys never did directly respond to my innocent observation about the focus of the PCIJ on non-Pinoy-masses-impacting stories (in light of events -- and their associated issues -- that, in the blink of an eye, snuff out thousands of INNOCENT PINOYS). Instead we seem more inclined to playing the well-it-is-our-blog card whenever this little question gets raised...

Former Military Air Traffic Controller Claims Comet Collision with Earth on May 25, 2006

4/13/2006 7:00:00 AM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To: National Desk

Contact: Dr. Michael Salla of the Exopolitics Institute, 808-323-3400, [email protected]

KEALAKEKUA, Hawaii, April 13 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Eric Julien, a former French military air traffic controller and senior airport manager, has completed a study of the comet 73P Schwassmann- Wachmann and declared that a fragment is highly likely to impact the Earth on or around May 25, 2006.

Comet Schwassman-Wachmann follows a five-year orbit that crosses the solar system's ecliptic plane. It has followed its five year orbit intact for centuries; but, in 1995, mysteriously fragmented. According to Julien, this is the same year that a crop circle appeared showing the inner solar system with the Earth missing from its orbit. He argues the "Missing Earth" crop circle was a message from higher intelligences warning humanity of the consequences of its destructive nuclear policies. He links this crop circle to May 25, 2006, and identifies the comet Schwassmann-Wachman as the subject of higher intelligence communications.

Using NASA simulations of the comet's path, Julien concludes that impact is likely around May 25 precisely when the comet crosses the Earth's ecliptic plane. While the first fragment will cross at approximately 10 million miles, lagging fragments threaten to collide. While astronomers have stated that the comet poses no direct threat, Julien argues that some fragments are too small to observe. Astronomers have predicted possible meteor showers indicating some cometary debris will enter the atmosphere.

Julien argues that the kinetic energy of even a 'car sized' fragment will impact the Earth with devastating effect. He concludes the May 25 event is tied in to the Bush administration's policy of preemptive use of nuclear weapons against Iran, and the effect of nuclear weapons on the realms of higher intelligences. Regarding its importance, Julien declares: "we have to save lives when we have such information to share with the public". He further claims it important "to preserve all data, historical artifacts and precious material in the event of such a collision." Julien predicts that the comet collision will occur in the Atlantic Ocean between the Equator and the Tropic of Cancer, and generates 200 meter waves. Julien concludes that "each person with this information has to take responsibility to warn potential victims."

She said it was just a US suggestion, De Venecia said a draft is floating, Tiglao said there's no such thing, and last but not the least Guingona probably thinks everyone is dreaming! Holy Mohammed!

This can all be clarified if the US Embassy can produce a copy of that draft which Gloria claims the US originated. I bet Gloria does not even know who wrote the damn suggestion.

It's actually a clever political strategy on GMA's part

by Feling (no login)

Now the debate is on the presence of U.S. troops and no longer so much on ousting Arroyo. With the greatest threat to her administration coming from the unpredictability of support from the military, what better way to keep the Phil. armed forces at bay than the presence of U.S. troops in Mindanao? By appearing to go all out in support of Bush's terrorism policies, will Bush risk the embarrassment by allowing the one he has an agreement with, go down the drain?

As to any anti-American sentiments, the U.S. knows how inconsistent this is. The U.S. has proven through the years that they can pretty much manipulate Philippine politics at will--with dollars.

by adding to the fire of disunity because of the disorganized way this issue is being handled. The mouth cannot seem to vocalize what the brain is thinking and the rest of the body seems paralyzed by the constant pressure applied to quell the rage inside.

Please read the Stratfor prediction below, they point to the MLSA as the fuse that could trigger an explosion.

The Wet Market - The Philippines Through My Eyes

by (no login)

The Wet Market

I woke up early this morning and I heard a rooster crow. My thoughts went back to those mornings in the Philippines when you hear the early morning footsteps of people and tri-cycles passing by. No doubt most, if not all heading to the wet market.

I remember getting up and getting dressed so that I too could get to the wet market before the days heat began. While dressing I would hear people busy in the kitchen, the rustle of pots and pans and mumbled talking. Dressing and knowing full well that hot coffee and pandsal would be there to meet me when I descend the stair and enter the kitchen. Sitting at the table on plastic chairs more common in America to be use on the patio outside then in the house, I sip my steaming hot coffee and eat warm pandsal. The maid is making hot cakes or other such food items for Jan-Brian who’s still sleeping in his bed and Janet is busy preparing for market, but takes the time to kiss me and say good morning. Dogs bark, rosters crow and the occasional croak of a gecko hanging on the wall. The sounds of vendors passing by shouting what food or drink they have for sale. All now, fond memories.

The morning is cool and it’s still dark out. The walk is short to the place where we will wait and eventually hire a tri-cycle to take us to the wet market. While we wait I hear the scrap, scrap, scarp of an old woman and her walis tingting made from palm, sweeping debris into small piles that she will later pickup and dispose of or burn. My thoughts are broken as I hear Janet talk to the driver and ask if he would take us to the wet market.

Its lighter now as we ride down paved and unpaved roads in the tri-cycle, a tri-cycles who side car is a bit short for me due to my height. My head would bump the roof now and then when we hit a pothole or a rough section of road, reminding me to hold my head lower. We are in a busy section of town now, you know this almost immediately as the sounds of life abound and of course the ever present exhaust fumes pumped in to your lungs from tri-cycles and jeepneys that abound in an areas such as this.

The tri-cycle comes to a halt with a slight yawn and jerk; I grab the pipe that’s welded to the front of the side car to aid me in getting out, my knees grateful to be able to stretch. Janet pays the driver the P3.25 fare and a peso as a tip, a sign that he’s been of service and gracious driver.

I love the wet market and as we enter I smile because I remember that the wet market is the place I took Janet on our last date on my trip to the Philippines prior to this one. Life is everywhere and the sights, sounds and smell of the market are fantastic. We pass the vegetables, row and rows of them cascades of colors fill you eyes as you pass by them and you can smell the freshness of the harvest.

Grains of all colors and textures in bins, buckets and barrels sitting side by side. The green of mongo beans offset by the tan color of a grin I can’t identify all melting in to so many varieties and sizes of rice.

I’m mesmerized by the shear size of the area used to sell fish. An area the size of, if not larger than that of the Quezon City bus terminal. I stop often to look at the fish, some of which I have never seen before. This too, although smelly, is a colorful place gray and blacks, blues and yellow and the silver of course. Even the meat market has something to offer in the way of memories if not the smell of a slaughterhouse then the sound of each vendor competing for your business.

Most colorful and one that pleases the eyes is the fruit section. Bananas of every size and type. You can smell the sweetness of pineapple as you walk by the fruit vendors. They are cutting them removing the skin and eyes shaping them with spirals almost as if it were a works of art more than tasty treats to eat. Janet stops at a vendor and buys a small bunch of latundan, banana’s that are not much longer than my finger. She buys them because she knows I love to eat them.

I feel the shopping bags made from old cement sacks whose make shift handles are digging in to my hands. They are full and are beginning to get somewhat heavy and although I love going to the wet market, I’m glad when Janet tells me we are done.

How I miss the Philippines……………………………………

The Philippines though my eyes - Sunset

by (no login)

To the north of Tagbilaran City there was at one time a seawall, from the age of it you would have to guess it was built sometime during Spain’s rule, but I don’t know this for sure. Regardless of age it is a place that I loved to go late evening to sit and watch as the day’s sky change in to a multitude of colors until the final color black with glittering stars and sometimes a lover’s moon would be natures display.

It’s here where you can sit and enjoy life simple solitude. As dusk closes, the ocean seems to calm and the sun falls oh so slowly behind a point of land that extends out in to the bay. As I sit and ponder I suddenly hear a plopping sound. I look and can see the fisherman in their boats trolling their nets and plopping the sea with a tool made from half of coconut shell attached to a stick used in attempt to scare the fish into the net. As the sun disappears behind the trees of the point, all that can be seen is their shaded outlines and the occasional bird landing in them to retire for the night. The setting sun watched from a white clouded mountain top is nothing compared to the beauty of this sunset.

I think about my forefathers and family who have past, those that I had never known, I think of my Lolo and Lola and wonder; is this the sunset they had watched in days long past? I feel them with me now and hear them tell me yes, we have seen the same.

Night has fallen and the only light is that of the stars and the fishing boat lanterns. The light of lanterns glistens and dances in the ripples the water and in them you can just see the outline of men tending their nets. It’s not long before you hear a scraping noise along the seawall, the sound of hermit crabs dragging their shells, where they are going and what they are doing? only they know.

As I gaze out in to the darkness of the night my heart is content and soul is at peace; I will always remember a sunset in Bohol.

Gman Here is an example of what I wrote about

by Usabaker (no login)

Gman here is an article that that speaks of the issues with the government and how hard it is to do business in the Pinas. What I wrote to you in my post The Problem;

First posted 02:41pm (Mla time) April 06, 2006
By Lira Dalangin-Fernandez
PUSHING for Charter change anew, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said
that political reforms were crucial to bring the country to first world
status.
And amid the launching of a movement by five senators for her
resignation, Arroyo said investors wanted politicking to stop because
it was getting in the way of development.

"Our investor friends are sending out a very important message -- what
they're saying is stop the politics, which is getting in the way of
development," she said in a speech at the Oriental Mindoro Investment
Summit in Calapan City in the province on Thursday.

"The world is watching and viewing our political system and wondering
if we have the will to succeed. We need a sweeping reform of our
politics and governance if we want to break into the first world status
in 20 years," Arroyo said.

She said Charter change would make the country stronger economically
and empower local government units.

"That's why we should bring more power to the provinces,

more accountability by politicians and less power concentrated in
Manila," she said.

Despite legal obstacles and opposition from various groups, the
President had expressed support for the people's initiative as a mode
of amending the 1987 Constitution that would pave the way for a shift
to a parliamentary system.

She said bringing the country to a first world status in 20 years went
hand in hand with reforming the political system.

"I will welcome the day when we all stand side by side, all shades of
the political spectrum and share the victory podium of economic reform
together rather than jamming the gears of the nation into reverse,"
Arroyo said.

by Usabaker (no login)

Don’t respond to the person posting Anonymous, you only give him a reason to show how immature and ignorant he is. If you will notice he can’t actually articulate a complete sentence and when he some how mistakenly does, he does so making himself look like an immature fool with some incoherent ranting.

The true irony his behaving like child, name calling people, probably makes him feel important.

I always wonder if people with such horrible manners online have the same inept social skills in person. I wish they would institute a policy of having to pass a test to be able to interact with society. His action can attest to his up bringing and shame his parents.

Like I said ignore him as I am now doing. He’s not worth the time it takes to reply.

Enjoy!

GREAT!!!! heres a thought

by Usabaker (no login)

Enjoy the rest of your stay... have some lambanog for me I saw your post about the money thing. You know you should consider building some apartments near the school there. This way you can have your wife’s family manage it and it will do to things for you.

1. It will give them an income (pay for management not 100% of the rental income); this will help to keep the stress off you and your wife from being asked for support on a more then normal basis.

2. When you do move there you can have a place to stay with the comforts you want in place, yet don’t have to worry so much about in the way of care and maintenance.

3. It can provide you an income as well.

Land varies by location but for the most part you will be looking at $5,000.00 US per 500 square meters (5381 US square foot)

Just a thought

Yes, Possibly apartments would be a good investment

by Gman (no login)

Thanks for the idea. I had thought about the possibility of rental property here in Cagayan. I looked at some Apartments here that a Doctor is having built. He is having 10 units constructed. They are 3 bedroom, 1 bath. Well built, but fairly simple accommodations. They are 2 story. He says that he will rent them for P10,000 per month. I talked to some people here that say they think P10,000 is a lot of rent for most here to pay? I am not sure, as I am use to Florida property where rental prices ha vent been that low in 35 years or so.

My wife's mother is actually getting married again, as her father passed away a few years ago. So, I feel certain she will not want to manage them. She has two sisters. One is married, but I consider the husband to be to lazy to count on as far as trusting him to manage the property. Her youngest sister is single and still in college. She plans to go abroad to be an RN after graduation.

What do you think about new homes as an investment? I was thinking of nice homes in gated subdivisions?

Wow P10,000 things have changed

by Usabaker (no login)

Investments

Gated communities will give you the highest return on investment, just realized though that return on investment is not that great in the Pinas. The exception might be in CEBU at the “Beverly Hills” gated communities because this is where you will find allot of foreigners working in the manufacturing and design industries and will as retirees who have a large income. The homes there are like those found here in America and not the typical hollow block construction you will see thought the Pinas.

WOW! P10,000 seems a bit high In Naga City in the Bicol region not Cebu, we were paying P5500 per month for a two story, two bedroom, one bath apartment, but that was 4 years ago.

I can provide you a contact of a company that can help your sister in-law when she completes her studies. I know the CEO who lives here in San Diego and deals in health-care field providing health care workers, nurses, doctors, and the like to care facilities and hospitals here in the US. I won’t see him until next Ateneo University Alumni meeting in May as he’s currently in Manila setting up another office. You can email me your or her contact information to [email protected] <you know yahoo, not yahoooooo, helps cut the spam down> and I will send his contact information. I’d rather not post it to this forum because of the mental capacity of some of the users here, you know what I mean?

CoeL - Its been awhile

by (no login)

Its really good to corresponded with you again, after my trip to Hawaii to manage that C4ISR work on the USS Frank Cable, I just never really logged on to the internet to do much more than my job and check email. I guess I got to busy working on the house.

But as always, I'm like the pain one might get in the lower back, I seem always seem to show-up when things are stressed, like what’s happening in this forum. I have however, with age, learned to temper my responses and to plain ignore those who seem to lack the ability to reason.

That’s not to say that I no longer have that terse streak in me, heh heh heh, but it rarely surfaces to wield its furry. I guess you could say I’m a kinder, gentler bully… I mean Billy…

I stared a new job with another military contracting firm November 05’ and have been really loaded down with work. So between all the organizations my wife and I belong too, the kids (another on the way), the house and work things are somewhat hectic so I started writing again to break it all up.

All and all things are going well I can understand you concerns “uncertainty of the future” I’ve mine as well. The whole “Parliamentary” thing feels like bad mojo to me. The schedule I set to move to the Philippines has slipped by 3 years. The two layoffs I went through and lack of funding for the construction of the houses and apartments have caused the delay. But that’s okay there is a reason for everything.

Well back to the grind… you take care my friend.

Changes in Cagayan De Oro

by Gman (no login)

My first visit to Cagayan de Oro was about 10 years ago. I commend the local businessmen and city leaders here. There is a very significant change in this city for the better.

Three nice malls that are full of people. Good restaurants for most any taste and a few pretty nice subdivisions here. The people here are friendly and it has a very safe environment.

I plan to buy a home here so when I visit I will have a good place to stay. Possibly it could be a good investment. Heck, I can buy a very nice home here by Filipino standards, in a gated subdivision for the cost of a mid priced European car!

Cagayan is going forward!

Good to hear you are enjoying my city. My paternal ancestry hails from Camotes Island in Cebu and ended up in Cagayan de Oro City. I've spent a good deal of my youth there after I was sent down there from Manila by my parents and before moving on in my teens to Cebu City.

I now own one of those buldings in the Divisoria area and partly own a few others there. It is actually where I plan to retire when I actually reach 50 years old(a decade from now since I currently consider myself partly retired).

Cagayan de Oro City has been well managed but the last time I was there the traffic was getting horrendous. I sure hope it's been remedied.

Enjoy my city, GMAN. Ma-ayong pag-abot!

It is amazing

by Gman (no login)

I find it amazing what people will say on the internet to another person. It is kind of like how different people can be when they speak on the phone. They have far more courage when out of arms reach than when in person.

I read the things that Lemuel Abarte says's and I just laugh. He proves my points for me without me saying anything. It is easy to assume that he is childish, uneducated, ignorant, poor, very tiny and simply a "coward".

It is easy for me to also assume in my presence, he would have nothing to say but possibly "yes sir". I am 6ft 4, 240lbs and in excellent physical shape. A tiny man such as Lemuel would never dare offend me in person in fear that I would fold him up like the trash he is and dispose of him in a waste receptacle.

I assure all that he would definitely be speechless. Possibly he would climb into his tree and hide very quietly?

Why would I pay an income tax. The facilities that you refer to are paid for with money from taxes on what people like me spend. The greatest source of tourist income comes from Americans like me. We are over 20% of the Philippines tourist industry. When we come here, we spend money and it helps the economy a lot. $37 Billion US dollars arrives here annually from either Filipinos working abroad in the US or Americans sending money to loved one here.

Do your homework before you make any further ignorant statements. The economy here is not good in the Philippines, but it would be a hell of a lot worse if it wasn't for American money coming in.

"80 for 80" Philippines' most memorable project ???

by banana (saba type) (no login)

Can we plant 80 million bananas (saba type) for the 80 million Filipinos starting next year, year 2006?

I think, when it is healthy, in one year's time, it can produce 70 banana fingers (saba) per banana tree or shrub and it will become sustainable since banana thrives like herbs.

The motive and the motto will be : For anyone to harvest (street kids, strangers ,transients, etc...)

And these bananas could be planted at the side of national highways (quite distant from the highway of course---if in case storms come-they won't block the road).

Banana is rich in potassium. Potassium or "K" is used to make the arms of trees strong so when you climb to it (tree), the branch will not break off. Banana will harden human bones. And the banana saba can be eaten raw or ripe and it can be cooked or made "pochero", a favorite ilonggo delight. (Try to cooked meat viand, even without seasoning, it tastes sweet and delicious with riped banana saba on it) . When green and raw, it can still be cooked and eaten after being dipped in bagoong.

UP los banos can help in producing plenty of banana suckers by their tissue culture method. But there are lots of sources of this nationwide. And with the government or private person's help, they can raise 80 million banana planting materials from June 2005 to December 2005 so by May 2006, we all are Goin' bananas (Does this expression connote something bad? I hope it doesn't. And thanks).

I just suggest this because I became hungry many times before. So many times when I was still studying in a Jesuit school. By God's grace I graduated and banana had been a part of my growing up especially in my elementary years.

Thanks and may this inspires us. - banana (saba type)

Note: " When the hole is dug and ready, it only takes a minute to plant a banana."

Re: "80 for 80" Philippines' most memorable project ???

by Usabaker (no login)

This is a great idea the only problem I see is that unscrupulous persons would harvest the bananas and sell them I addition to that problem you might have;

1.) Cutting of the flower for use in cooking e.g. banana blossom in kare-kare
2.) Fear “someone else” will get the banana before “they” will so the bananas would be harvested before they were ready
3.) Banana farmers and merchants would poison / kill the trees because it bites in to their business.

As I said this is a great idea and would be worth a try. I don’t recall “community gardens” in the Pinas like some communities in the US have that might be the place such as growing things could take place.

We are talking about a country of poverty

by Gman (no login)

A little bit of something is better than a whole lot of nothing. Maybe just having one banana would be the difference in a child going to bed without an empty stomach. Maybe if the parents had 100 pesos from selling some banana it could provide the child with some milk?

There are many things that could be done to improve the overall quality of life for the Filipino people. It has to begin somewhere and somehow. I know many ways to improve life quality for the people of the Philippines. However, some go against religious beliefs and other methods require unity among the people and a caring government that is willing to listen. The Philippines doesn't have to be poor forever.

I am here now and I see technology and ways that are 50 years behind. Something is wrong when a RN only makes 208 pesos per day. 208 pesos is not enough to finance a family.

Change has to begin somewhere or the Philippines will never change. Only get worse.

Read and comprehend

by Gman (no login)

Lemuel, read and comprehend what I write from my words, not your thoughts about what you have read. I will have you know that I have been in the Philippines about 4 out of the last 6 months. I am here now and I know what things are like here.

I also see many reasons there is such plight in the Philippines. I see some people who just don't care or want any better of a life. I see others of whom need direction and I see some that are just plain out lazy and could care less.

There are about 87 million people in the Philippines. The population here grows much faster than the economy. Planned parenthood should be taught to many here, as I see that the poorest of people seem to have the most offspring. Education should be mandatory for all children. It should also be enforced.

Now we speak of the critical issue at hand. The economy here is Crap. Billions of dollars per year is sent out of the USA to pay for overseas manufacturing of American products. I think that the people of whom are concerned in the Philippines, along with the government could make a plan to capture some of this business. Look at Korea. There wasn't a tree standing or a building that wasn't destroyed after the war ended there over 40 years ago. Now they manufacture two different brands of cars. The people there are far better off than the Philippines. Why is that? I would say one of the reasons is because they have listened to western businessmen and moved forward. I will also say that there seems to be more unity and desire among the people of Korea.

There are ways to fix these problems. Griping and complaining, along with sitting on ones ass will change absolutley nothing.

The Problem

Agreed, but then there are those highly educated such as civil engineers, educators and the like who are unable to get work because the demand for work is greater then the availability of work. It has become harder and harder to get oversea work as well. Another problem arises when one looks for work, you might be more qualified than another, but if that other is from the same school as the hiring manager then you will loose out, sounds odd, but it true.

"There are about 87 million people in the Philippines. The population here grows much faster than the economy. Planned parenthood should be taught to many here, as I see that the poorest of people seem to have the most offspring. Education should be mandatory for all children. It should also be enforced.

Ahh the problem, birth control and sex education BOTH not taught in the Philippines. The problem here is more the church then anything else. If sex education was taught and birth control more available it might help. People can go to the local health center and get condoms for free but 8 out of 10 times they don’t have any… in addition, there is no confidentiality, some how the word always gets out that Bong when to the health center and asked for condoms.

Education is manditory, however not enforced. I once asked why a batch of kids were not in school and was told "we don't have uniforms" Uniforms.... can you beleave that?

"Now we speak of the critical issue at hand. The economy here is Crap. Billions of dollars per year >is sent out of the USA to pay for overseas manufacturing of American products. I think that the >people of whom are concerned in the Philippines, along with the government could make a plan >to capture some of this business. Look at Korea. There wasn't a tree standing or a building that"

At one time the Philippines was the center of manufacturing and good in Asia, the USA and UK loved doing business in the Philippines because of the fact communication was easy, the Pinas was the only English speaking nation in Asia at the time. Filipinos even today are sought-out by other nations to teach English. The Marcos years, began a decline (I’ll hear trash for this statement) in people doing business due to the red-tape, corruption and political pay-offs. In the late 90’s America starting pushing manufacturing off-shore, by then other counties had got a foot hold in and were able to offer labor rates that we $4.00 US dollars below that of the Philippines, this gap has since increased. With global communications in more 3rd world countries than ever before and the fact that countries such as China artificially manipulate their currency, the Philippines look less and less the place to build manufacturing facilities.

The Philippine government’s unwillingness to make the Philippines a place companies want to do business by making it easy to do business is a BIG problem as you mentioned. The regulations, fees, taxes and of course pay-off and bribes cause so many headaches for foreign investors they just don’t want to deal with it. If the Philippines were smart they would head down to Brazil and see how they fixed their problems, they had much the same problems at one time but are now a manufacturing mecca.

>There are ways to fix these problems. Griping and complaining, along with sitting on ones ass will >change absolutley nothing.

Here is the problem and Philippine business men haven’t got a clue yet.

IT services; People are getting CS degrees like they are the saving skill set. It is not, the Philippines is too far behind the curve on this one and other countries have sucked much of the area of business up; India is the Software king and cant be un-throne at this point it is also the Tech Services provider of choice for US company Call Centers.

Call Center; To late fort his as well, sure there are small one here and there; but here too India got the jump on the Pinas so I doubt that CC will make a major impact on the Philippine economy.

Where the Philippines and the Filipino have an edge is in to fields, both of which the Philippine government should be exploiting and promoting but is not;

1.) Health care services; Filipinos make up more then 30% of the US nurses and more are needed as the baby boomers of the US age more and more health care services will be needed. The Filipino had always excelled in this area. This area alone if the Philippine government would broker; offering heath services to the US and world could bring about great change.

2.) Elderly Care: between 40% to 80% of elderly care is provide by the Filipino in America. Another area where Filipinos excel. (actually part of health care services)

3.) Education Services; There is a huge need for educators in the US but is extremely difficult to get these job because of all the US and Philippine red-tape. This is an area where the Philippine government could step in and broker a deal with the US to stream line the export of Filipino educators to the Philippines, but is not. Like health care, the Filipino excels in this area.

Sadly, these are too if not acted on soon will also become areas that other nations will grab and all that is really needed to exploit these services to for the Philippine government to help open doors and stream line all the immigrations and export policies with other countries, after that entrepreneurs would peruse the rest of the requirements and procedures.

How do I know all this? I was one of the prime members of an outsource team moving manufacturing from the US and Canada (a major telecommunications company) off-shore to Asia and S. America. Does this make me an expert? NO, but it has given me allot of insight and personal experience into the issues and where some places are chosen over others E.g. China –vs- Philippines –vs- Mexico.

I’ve also worked with other groups tiring to exploit the aforementioned services but have hit road block after road block.

Insults? How mature of you

by (no login)

Before you fire off insults from you computer whilst sitting in Taiwan, perhaps you would be better served learning English comprehension as my words simply stated “The Philippine government’s unwillingness to make the Philippines a place companies want to do business by making it easy to do business is a BIG problem”

In stating “government” this means as a whole, or was that not clear. It would be impossible to point out any one person as the [or a] problem. The problem sir/madam, would be at the least a departmental level but because of what needs to be done. In this case it means the several departments would need to be involved and historically in the Philippine departments do not work well together causing much delay and progress.

I stated only the obvious an I need not delve into the fact; for if you were informed or even willing to do research of your own you would find I said nothing that is out- of- line or false in nature.

The simple fact that you would rather insult than debate exhibits your lack of comprehension skill and simple analytical skills.

You have no idea of who or what the problem is so you generalize. What department are you referring to? Road block after road block you say, did you try the road that leads to the presidential palace?

Don't you dare blame the government unless you can pinpoint exactly who the BIG problem is because no everyone in government is the problem.

your immaturity and lack of comprehension

by usabaker (no login)

If you were and intelligent person and were actually attempting to develop business, in the Philippines or even cared would have read documents with regards to doing business in the Philippines by foreign companies and in doing so you would know the departments that I spoke of in my prior post were/are the Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Finance, National Economic Development Authority, and Presidential Management Staff.

If you would have read it and other documents you would have found one of the key elements was to build investor confidence. One of these documents, one that exhibits some of the areas that need improvement is the 2000 Investment Priorities Plan produced under President Estrada.

I tire of your ignorant and un-educated ramblings one of the BIGgest problem in doing business in the Philippines is people like yourself. Try investing a little of your time to find the information you need to post an intelligent response and less time casing insults which show your immaturity and lack of comprehension.

Re: The Problem

by Gman (no login)

Hello,

I find your response very informative and interesting. After reading what you have said, I feel that there are even greater problems in the Philippines that I was aware of.

However, I am a believer that any thing that is broken, can be fixed. Yes, it would require a lot of work and time. But, these are people and they are worth it. It will only get worse if something is not done now

I for one care about the people. I have traveled to the Philippines frequently and have made a few friends there, both Filipino and American. What is it going to take to make a change? I am willing to step up to the plate and do my part. Any suggestions?

The People's Initiative will lead to Charter Change of the Constitution making Gloria Macapagal a prime minister. She says the country needs a new government and this is the bitter pill that will cure the current ills.

Just sit back and relax, the gears are in motion already!! This BIG problem in government mentioned by another poster is about to go away.

Yes you are right....

by usabaker (no login)

Yes there are allot of problems in the Philippine, much of which you find in many other countries such as Equador, Panama and Mexico. I hope that I didn’t lead you to believe that things can’t be fixed as I do believe they can. Some are changing now but the wheels tend to turn slow.

When I was with the company that was outsourcing I tired hard to build a case to have the Philippines as one of our outsource locations. Much of what I stated in the original post was the reasons it did not happen.

I wish I knew how to help make change myself and could tell you, but truly I don’t. I feel the future and change will be in the hands of the youth and like you said in your post education is the key. I am not a person of means, but my wife and I do what we can.

We are involved in organizations whose charter is to help improve things in the Philippines; we work with Alumni organizations involved in providing help and scholarships to students. For over 7 years my wife and I have sponsor students; some we provide the money and means to attended University others at the elementary and high school levels books and computers. We’ve provided mentorship in our field of experience when need using the internet as the conduit.

Of course like most Filipinos we support our family continually and friends as well when we are need.

Hopefully in a few years we will be living in the Philippines and hope to spend our time helping the community.

You are wrong, Gman.

by Lemuel G. Abarte (no login)

I have been here since time immemorial. You came only for 6 months and you think you know all the solutions? The problem with you Americans is that you come to a place where you are at a loss apart from directions given by locals and then you presume you have an omniscient solution to all the problems. It is not only you, most "whites" I've met have the same attitude. Just because your house is made of glass, don't think outright that we will build glass houses.

What are the many reasons about the plight of the Philippines you could name? You see, you look upon the problems of the Philippines from an entirely different perspective - your own. You were born when everything in your place were well set and you just joined the ride of those who built America. Hello! Once upon a time, America was like the Philippines. Ever heard of the Wild West?

Planned parenthood? Tell that to the Pope, not the Filipinos.

Education is mandatory. Enforced? We do not believe in that idea but we oblige kids to be in school.

Do you know that America does not invest in the Philippines? American investment pie shows that the Philippines is the least of all foreign countries that America pours in billions of dollars. It is not even a billion dollars by any chance at any given moment. But we don't care about your investment. What business to capture are you talking about? We are into manufacturing but there are indirect costs. We do not want you to come to the Philippines to ask us to build a mammoth infrastructure together with these and that and those and blah, blah, blah and ask us to adopt Western attitudes and culture and to be like America before you invest. Counting the costs, the amount we spend for infrastructure is equal to the amount of your investment! That means, the Filipinos should be your equal partners in the business. But guess what? All the money you earn goes back to America.

You presume we do not follow Western methods of business? Hello! Where have you been?

Don't you think we burn our asses? Once again, reread my first paragraph. Then read this all over again. Then, better shut your mouth because it is YOU keeps complaining.

#1 Lemuel, I have enough money to never work again. God blessed me with very much. And yes, I earned it all legally through intelligent investments.

#3 What makes your tiny little mind so bitter and angry?

#4 Do you have hallucinations that make you think up all of this BS?

#5 Does the fact that your such a tiny little man cause you to shoot your mouth off?

#6 Are you so jealous of me that your going to allow it to upset you so much?

I think I will Re-focus my energy

by Gman (no login)

I have been on this forum for about three months now. I have read some real BS here and I have also wasted my time "arguing and joking" instead of debating. Debating is good, stimulating to the mind and sometimes beneficial. However, I feel that I will turn some of my amusment around to articles of importance.

I am presently in the Philippines now. I am actually in Cagayan De Oro now. Since September of 2005 I have made three trips here and have spent more than 4 months combined time here out of the last 6 months. I have traveled to many places in my lifetime, but seem to keep coming back here to the Philippines to learn even more. I married a Filipina on December 29, 2005. I had been single for most of my life. I had a short marriage many years back that didn't work out. My wife will come to the United States in September or October to live there. We will buy a home in Cagayan and make annual visits here.

As a American businessman, I would like to take part in doing something to help the people here. Giving them money has prov-en to be a mistake. I gave some of them money to help them get their lives on track. Instead of them using it to better their lives, they wasted it and told others that I had given it to them. I had people that I had never met contacting me and requesting money for one reason or another.

I would like very much to participate in a group that wishes to succeed in making a better place out of the Philippines. I think if organized properly a lot of good can be done. This will require many people that are unselfish and wish to donate their time to a good cause.

I will have to concede, you are correct it’s not on the site my mistake I assumed it was because all awards and prizes (monies) won by contestants and proceeds earned from the conference are provided to the schools.

But if you look at the originations who have organized these in the past and the origination doing it this time around you will notice they are listed as .org’s Short for .organization. Originally designated for non-profit firms and any other organizations that did not fit under the .com or .net extension, any individual or business may now register a .org domain name.

So what is wrong with it?

7TH ALL-ATENEO ALUMNI CONVENTION

Fellow Ateneans Welcome!

Once again, alumni from all over North America and the rest of the world will convene for the bi-annual 7th All-Ateneo Convention on June 29 to July 2, 2006. The Society of Ateneans of Naga City in San Diego, California (SANC-SD) will host this affair in this finest city in the U.S.

More than 200 alumni and guests attended the last convention held in Toronto, Canada in 2004. This time around, a bigger crowd is expected to participate as California alone is home to hundreds of Ateneans coming from all seven Ateneo schools across the Philippines.

The officers and members of SANC-SD invite you to join us for three days of fun, reminiscing our memorable years in our respective alma mater. We look forward to seeing you and enjoying your company on that holiday weekend.

Gman, I can never be a part of your so-called "white" race.

by Lemuel G. Abarte (no login)

Because you are a myth. You don't even have a proper name. "Whites" have names. What's yours? Gman? What's that. Also for your Brokeback buddy "Anonymous".

Reminds me of your case when you were still in caves.

Yeah, you're right, you are Gman, Groan man.

is "NOT" A DISCREDIT to the filipino people.
he can't be BECAUSE he is "NOT" even a filipino.]
he is a "CHINESE" who impersonates a filipino.
his wife is not a filipina either. his wife is a thailand
bar girl.WHERE HE PICKED UP when he was a student.
this guy is a grduate of a thailand trade school, which the curriculum does "not count" and so is his major line of studies "an artisian well digging"
he is a "waterboy" in short.
so please don't count his misdemeanor as a "PILIPINO"
because he is a "CHINA MAN".
he has nothing better to do but to B.S. in this forum.
you know how the saying goes;a noisy river is a shallow river. thats all he is a noisy river. period.

utterly amazed

by usabaker (no login)

I’m utterly amazed how much this forum has degraded from its humble beginnings, I am however not surprised. The rhetoric and ignorant postings I have just read through just show what happens to a forum when the Administrators of said forum play favorites.

This is what happens when you censor and delete posts of people who would add value to the forum causing them to no longer read and participate because you favor friends or disagree with the posters comments.

It’s a shame that PHNO’s cyber group has become just like a AOL message board filled with absolute garbage.
