does being local and known help in business?

January 26 2008 at 6:14 PM

I have been working in the real estate business for fourteen years, both as a journalist an analyst and lately running my own business marketing properties abroad.Does anyone think it helps to know someone and the experience they have, when it comes to buying a property from them? I always consider myself as supremely honest, but not everyone is, so I cannot help but wonder why some people rush into purchases overseas without taking any care at all about whom they are dealing with. Large sums of money change hands and sometimes can be lost altogether. Why not buy from someone you can know and trust?
There are estate agents who are so young you wonder if they can possibly have any idea of what you want, sometimes so ignorant their product it is embarrassing, yet still, they sell. Is it because there isn't any choice?
Surely it makes sense to go to someone who is local and probably with good local references when it comes to making any sort of financial investments?
Maybe the plethora of chain coffee shops in Muswell Hill goes against my argument and we all want the faceless organisations, but if personal service and care of individual needs is what you want in a property purchase then buy from someone you know. What do you think?

eljay, been here for 25 years.
