Welcome to The Frugalista Files (and, yes, this is long...VERY long!)

Welcome frugalistas!
The Frugalista Files is an international community of old and new friends with common interests in frugality, thrift, debt reduction, personal finance, simplicity and simple living. We also welcome posts on related subjects, including recipes and homemaking, do-it-yourself, travel, kids, pets, homesteading and gardening.
Established on May 23, 2006, this is the first thread of a brand new internet community. Pull up a chair and pour yourself a cup of tea as you learn more about us. We hope this forum will become a valuable resource for you. We invite you to visit and post often. We also have an integrated chat room where you can meet your friends.
Anyone may read this board. In order to post or chat, you must become a member of the forum and log in. Click on Post a New Message and follow the instructions. You'll be good to go as soon as the forum owner reviews your request, usually within a few hours. If we know you by another name, please tell us what it is. Note that membership will be automatically denied to anyone using a proxy server.
We welcome your views and opinions. Please feel free to post on a variety of topics. We recognize that there are differences of opinion in any community, and we respectfully embrace the differences…they are how we learn from each other.
Please bookmark this site now. It may be awhile before search engines find us. Our Net54 forum number is 500426.
You will be able to edit your own posts. As a matter of courtesy, please include a statement at the bottom to let us know what you have done—such as, “Edited to correct spelling,” etc. Use this feature for minor changes—if editing the post materially changes it, a separate post may better clarify your position.
“On topic” does not mean that all posts must be about frugality or simplicity. It means “on topic for this thread.” We understand that threads, like personal conversations, often veer off in different directions. When this happens, we ask that you start a new thread if you wish to discuss the new topic. Readers who aren’t following the original thread may be very interested in the new discussion.
No racial, religious, sexual orientation or political slurs will be tolerated. Religion and politics, as a part of your daily life, are acceptable topics. Religious or political proselytizing is not acceptable. If you have questions about religion or politics, we encourage you to pursue other sources of information where you can get definitive and appropriate answers.
Language standards are PG. Obscenities will be deleted and the writer will be flogged.
NO SPAM. It will be deleted as soon as we see it.
Baiting, bullying, personal attacks and repeated flames will result in the loss of posting privileges. (We hope this never comes up).
This forum is ad-free, initially paid for by the forum owner. Others have offered to help financially so that it will remain ad-free in the future. Any financial contribution to the forum, for any reason, does not confer any special rights to the individual.
This is not a private or secret board. We assume that our members and guests visit other sites on the internet. Please don’t discuss other boards’ business here…and hopefully you won’t discuss our business there. All forums need the opportunity to establish their own identity.
This board is not a democracy. We welcome your suggestions, but they are not binding on the forum owner or moderators…even if we try them for awhile. We hope to be enlightened despots…with the emphasis on enlightened. We have to have a board that we can manage. We hope things will run so smoothly that we have nothing to do!
Your forum owner is Maxine. Bethann, Glenda, Pam(TX) and TammyL have volunteered to be moderators, and we'll have them up and running in a few days. They will have a few magical powers, but not many. Moderators will be consulted before changes are made.
Among our magical powers are the ability to lock or delete threads. We don’t rule this out, but don’t expect to see it often, if at all. Once something is posted, you should assume that it’s here to stay.
Forum ownership is new to us. We are at the bottom of the learning curve, and we know it is harder than it looks. We hope you will be patient with us as we learn the ropes. We are hoping the parameters we have established at the beginning will eliminate squabbling and reduce the need for changes along the way. We will make every effort to communicate changes before they occur…or at least explain them when they occur, not after.
FUTURE PLANS—We plan to make this forum more visually appealing, but don’t yet have the skill. We wanted to get the board up and running for you right away. We will re-visit graphic design in July.
Also, we plan to establish a recipe board in the future…another July project. In the meantime, post your recipes in the forum and they will be copied when we have a separate recipe board. Please do NOT post recipes from other boards unless you are the person who originally posted it there. Don’t steal their stuff—recipes can’t be copyrighted, but we respect the intellectual property of other communities.
Thanks for dropping in today! We're glad you came. Now let’s get started, and post, post, post. Your posts will get this board up and running and keep it moving. (This is especially true if we encounter some bumps along the way). Now let’s play nice with the other children.
Feel free to e-mail us at
[email protected] if there are forum matters you don’t wish to post on the bulletin board. We are not online 24/7 (although it often seems as though we are), but someone will respond as quickly as possible, usually within a few hours.
PS We will be bumping this thread to keep it on the first page for awhile.
