He acquired it, whilst a prisoner of war in Stalag VIIA, from a British officer who was planning to escape. I think the 'price' was six bars of chocolate, which were of more value to the officer than a watch.
The hands appear to be newer and are much more luminous than the digits. The latter appear to be unusual in that the upper ones are Roman Numerals, whilst the lower one are conventional Arabic [California dial]." - M.
