Tourney update

1st place PA MIA (repeat champions)
2nd place Jean's Beans
3rd place Onion Lake Borderchiefs

MIA defeated Jean's Beans in the final game 4-3. Jean's Beans, once again, allegedly made up Metis cards again for their non-aboriginal players. Two texts i recieved from my sources this weekend may sum up the Jeans Beans roster situation, "where's the native players" and "none r even brown...lol". In any event, sounds like a good rivalry brewing between these two teams. MIA beat Jean's Beans twice at the Meadow Lake Tourney a few weeks ago and have now met in the last three Native Stanley Cup finals.

By the sounds of it this is by far not the best native tourney anymore, they should not claim the title of Native Stanley Cup.

Tournament Comments

Its become pretty obvious the "Metis" card situation has become an embarrassment to the NBIMFC organizers who let this questionable identity issue go on with this event that was once considered the premiere Aboriginal hockey tournament. But as long as the teams keep entering and paying their entry fee, and as long as fans still continue to pay their admission, I doubt the organizers will change their position on their eligibility rules. We've seen this situation for the last three tournaments now and nothing has changed. They're not getting it that they are hurting the tounaments image, prestige and reputation, that's the sad part. Maybe one of these times, teams wont bother playing there and fans will stop coming out, by then it might be too late to fix what is already broken. No teams, no fans, no tournament. Since the "Metis" card situation is a mockery now, maybe the leadership or staff of the Metis Locals and MSN needs to take a stand as this directly effects their status/identity/membership issues, rather then contribute to the problem of handing out cards like bubblegum to children. In the end it sends a bad message, 'winning isnt everything, its the only thing!' Good thing we have guys like Milton who are tryin to build up "Indian Hockey" not destroy it. The fans of "Indian Hockey" should being saying "goodbye North Battleford, hello Saskatoon (and Regina)!", at least till the NBIMFC get their act together!

You know as someone who has brown skin and brown eyes to match my black hair, I am always amazed at what people think makes someone "native". Heck I've always been mistaken for Chinese or Mexican, so I'm not really sure what makes someone look, act, or officially "native"?

Is it some govt. hack in Ottawa who quotes section 35 of the Charter? Some INAC official in the 50's who decided that because your name is on a list you are "native" (by the way INAC guidelines allow status to non-natives via a Band Council Resolution but that's another issue). Is it because we need a goalscorer to win first prize? So many questions and not enough answers.

Native people by and large suffer from internalized racism. We see a good team, and we automatically assume they must be cheating by recruiting white guys. What real message do we send to our kids? There are people across this country in every rink that are looking to buy the best team money can by, and that folks, is who is killing hockey.

We win the big prize money and then we split it "evenly" of course after subtracting the star players share, because everyone knows we wouldn't have won without them. Hmmm? I thought we had egalitarian views in our cultures. Perhaps assimilation has brought greed to our communities to.

We win, we're not happy, we lose, we're even more pissed off. Where is the value of simply playing the game?

Native hockey is dying because we've forgotten the core values that make us unique and instead have chosen to say we're different simple because of a card.
