Lae prepares for singsing festival
BUSINESS houses and institutions in Lae are getting behind the staging of Papua New Guinea’s first-ever international singsing festival later this month.
The festival, set for March 20 to 25 at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium, will see visiting international contemporary groups performing alongside local talents such as Ben Hakalitz, Pius Wasi and Tambaran Culture, former Duadua member and co-founder Brown Bolong and George Telek.
Airlines PNG, Lae Builders, Origin Energy through their Boral gas product, Belltek Chemicals, PNG Forest Products, Mainland Holdings Ltd, Momahi Guest House, Liquid Inn, Doa Masani Bus Services and Mode Ltd are backing the festival.
The Environmental Law Centre PNG is sponsoring contemporary West Papua music group Tribal Zones, a revival of Black Brothers.
The festival is an initiative of the Village Development Trust and aims to promote the sustainable management of our natural resources through contemporary and traditional music, arts and culture.
Festival director Maine Winnie said the Village Development Trust was impressed with the response from a cross-sector of the community.
He thanked the business houses for their support and said they were looking forward to networking in addressing issues of sustainable natural resource management and promoting PNG’s rich culture and biodiversity.
The event will include the staging of a seminar and exhibitions. The seminar will address natural resource management, governance, community development, youth, and culture and arts.
Exhibitors will include the National Agriculture Research Institute, Forest Research Institute, Rainforest Habitat, Unitech, Markham Farms and Project Support Services.
The Village Development Trust has also brought together four members of the internationally re-knowned Sanguma band for a one-off show.
The organisers will be building an eco-home using the wokabaut sawmill and plan to auction the house while villagers on Aromot Island in Siassi will be sailing using the biggest dug-out canoe ever built.
Tickets for the event are being sold for K4 (adults), K2 (students) and K1 (children).
This is nice. It will be even better if it becomes an annual event. Ol tourist bai flock in to be part of this event. Some of us might even go there to see the singsing and join in...lol...
